We will celebrate the Red Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit on Friday, September 4th. It is an ancient church tradition to mark the opening of the academic year with a Mass of the Holy Spirit. Students may wear a red shirt to school that day with out of uniform bottom. Parents and parishioners, please join us for Mass at 8:15 A.M.

FR. JIM'S BIBLE SCHOOL, an exegetical study of the Bible, will begin Tuesday, September 15, at 7:00 P.M. in the OLPH Parish Life Center. The study will be centered around the Acts of the Apostles. Bring your Bible; no experience necessary!

SALLY FOSTER SALES HAVE BEGUN-It's that time of year again! The 8th grade class will once again be selling Sally Foster to raise money for their annual retreat to Wesley Woods. If you are interested in buying some wonderful wrapping paper or gifts, please contact an 8th grade student. Additional information will be sent home with each student. OLPH SCHOOL CARNIVAL--The Home and School is bringing back the School Carnival. The carnival will be held in conjunction with the OLPH "Outback" Football Bowl and the first gathering of all OLPH alumni. The date is Saturday, September 26, 2009.

It's time again for a Chattanooga tradition, the Knights of Columbus Council #610 Labor Day Picnic. The 67th Annual Labor Day Picnic and Family Outing will take place on September 7, 2009, from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Camp Columbus Bork Pavilion. The day will begin with a White Elephant Yard Sale at 9:00. Games and activities for the entire family will go on all day. Charity Bingo will start at 3:00 P.M. BBQ plates will be served from 11:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Take out is available by plate or in bulk. The menu consists of your choice of beef, pork, chicken or ribs accompanied by potato salad, beans, slaw, bread, and a beverage. The price is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Other concessions will also be available. Camp Columbus is located on Camp Columbus Road off Hixson Pike in Dallas Bay. Proceeds support our charitable activities throughout the year. Our monthly character traits will be cardinal and theological virtues. We live our virtues in the Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). In the Bible we read about Fruits of the Holy Spirit that God wants to grow in our lives. These fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Probably most kids, even you, would like to have these characteristics. We all try to live these values. But it's hard to always love, or be good or self-controlled when things aren't going our way or we are tired or some one is giving us a hard time. The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are outward signs that the Holy Spirit lives inside the person.

OLPH BAND--It's not too late to enroll in band class. Band class meets on Monday and Wednesday during the school day and does not interfere with after school activities or sports. Your student can learn to play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, or bells. Music teaches discipline and teamwork, and studies have shown that learning music increases overall brain power. Most band students receive scholarship assistance when they go to college. OLPH FOOTBALL kicked off the year with a victory over Normal Park, 26 to 14. The game was played at NDHS "under the lights" on Friday, August 14th. It was a team effort, with Will "Boney" Mahoney leading the way on offense with 215 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Medardo Espinoza led the defense. GO RAMS!!

LADY RAMS VOLLEYBALL had a great Jamboree this weekend at Boyd-Buchanan. The Lady Rams played eight games and won six of those games! Jessica Moore and Emily Wexler performed well throughout the day. Madeline Wurm maintained powerful serves capturing key points for the team. This was a great start to the season. GO LADY RAMS!!

Cheerleading practice will begin August 18th. Please meet in Ms. Stolpmann's classroom for a short meeting before practice begins. This is for the 7th and 8th grade girls.

8th grade parent meeting will be held Wednesday, August 19 at 6:00 in the PLC. Please be prepared to share your fundraising ideas for Wesley Woods and Washington, D.C. FOCUS and volunteer opportunities will also be discussed. Please plan on attending this very important meeting. This is a great opportunity to buy products you normally buy and help the 8th grade class earn money for their annual trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring.

OLPH Spanish Program--This year the Spanish Program is being taught by "The Spanish Team" which is a group of parent volunteers. Forrest and Monica Mohler will teach 1st and 5th grade; Blanco Rios, 2nd and 7th grade; Norma Neri, 3rd grade; Angela Hodges, 4th grade; Ivette Palacios, 6th grade: and Raquel Riesco, 8th grade. The curriculum will be tailored to every age with the focus on enabling the students to interact verbally with each other in another language, as well as exchange every day information. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the many different aspects and regions of Latin America, becoming aware of the diversity within the Hispanic culture. We want to thank these parents for their dedication and collaboration in developing this program for the OLPH students.

OLPH Home and School Association is starting off the school year with the SCRIP program which will have a new tuition reimbursement called TRIP. Everyone who purchases SCRIP cards can now help reduce OLPH School tuition for their families, friends, or as a donation to the tuition assistance fund. Sports physicals will be given at the OLPH gym on Saturday, August 8, 2009, from 10 A.M. until noon. The cost is $10.00 per student. Parents MUST come with their child/ren to complete the necessary forms. Students playing sports at OLPH School MUST have a sports physical before they will be allowed to participate. Congratulations to John Hillman, a 4th grader at OLPH who swam with the FTO Marlins this summer and received many awards. He placed first in the 25 Breast and 100 IM in the GRPA District Meet, and broke both District records for each event. This qualified him to go to the State Meet where he placed 3rd in the 25 yd Breaststroke and 2nd in the 100 IM. He also received an award from his team this summer for the highest points for boys 8 and under. Good job, John!

Forrest and Monica Mohler will teach 1st and 5th grade; Blanco Rios, 2nd and 7th grade; Norma Neri, 3rd grade; Angela Hodges, 4th grade; Ivette Palacios, 6th grade: and Raquel Riesco, 8th grade. The curriculum will be tailored to every age with the focus on enabling the students to interact verbally with each other in another language, as well as exchange every day information. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the many different aspects and regions of Latin America, becoming aware of the diversity within the Hispanic culture. We want to thank these parents for their dedication and collaboration in developing this program for the OLPH students.

OLPH Home and School Association is starting off the school year with the SCRIP program which will have a new tuition reimbursement called TRIP. Everyone who purchases SCRIP cards can now help reduce OLPH School tuition for their families, friends, or as a donation to the tuition assistance fund. OLPH School Carnival--The Home and School is bringing back the School Carnival, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, in conjunction with the OLPH "Outback Football Bowl" and the first gathering of all OLPH alumni. Bishop Stika will be attending, so mark your calendars now!
