Please join CAG (Creative Arts Guild) for FREE pizza and a concert by the OLPH Band on Monday, November 2, 2009, at 6 p.m. in the PLC. CAG is an organization at OLPH that benefits all children through the arts programs. They are instrumental in maintaining St. Cecilia's Closet and sponsoring used uniform sales. funded for the music and visual arts classes, field trips to arts programs, and programs brought to the school. A lot of work and fundraising is done by a very small group of parents. The CAG members would like to see more parents involved. Hope to see you there!

CALLING ALL SAINTS: Students in grades 1st through 4th, you are invited to dress up as your favorite saint on Friday, November 6, All Saints Day. Please tell your homeroom teacher if you will be participating. All students dressed as saints will process into Mass; please attach the saints' name to your costume. Students will need to know some facts about their saint-parents may help their children gather this information. All children need to bring their school uniform to change into. FAMILY BINGO NIGHT/Fish Fry
will be held in the PLC Friday, November 6, after the 5:30 Mass. Bingo cards are 50 cents per card donation. All proceeds benefit the OLPH School Spanish Program. Bring your kids, aunts, uncles, grandmas and grandmas for an evening of fun!

HELP EARN 20 FREE BOOKS FOR CLASSROOMS--The maker of "SunnyD" beverages is offering 20 grade-level appropriate books for collecting 20 SunnyD labels. Simply cut off the label from the bottles and turn in to your homeroom teacher or the school office. Extra labels collected will be worth 10 cents apiece, and SunnyD will donate the extra monies to the "Kids in Need Foundation." The due date for labels is October 30th.

MRS. MONAHAN’S 7TH GRADE GEOGRAPHY CLASS had Mr. Bill Morrison, Mrs. Morrison's husband, speak to the class about his time in Iraq. He told the students about the troops' activities, the differences between this deployment and his 2005 deployment, and the culture of the Iraqi people. This is part of the Middle East unit that the students are studying.

OLPH HOME & SCHOOL is participating in the following fundraisers: Box Tops for Education, Tyson A+ labels, Campbell’s Soup labels, Ink jet Cartridge Recycling. All items may be placed in the box in the back of the church. Money collected is being used to sponsor field trips as well as student and teacher needs.

OLPH HOODIES - Feel the morning chill in the air? Sweatshirt weather has arrived and you're in luck. The 8th grade is selling OLPH hoodies! We have some left on hand from the carnival that can be purchased immediately, but we are also taking pre-paid orders. Order forms will be in this week's Friday Folder for grades K-5 and are in both the school and church offices. If your student is in 6-8th grade, their homeroom teachers will also have forms available. If you are not sure what size you need, samples are available to try on in the school office. Orders are due by Friday, October 30 and should arrive within 2 weeks. Keep in mind these also make great gifts for godparents and grandparents as well as Christmas gifts. OLPH FOOTBALL - The OLPH Homecoming Football Game was cancelled on Friday night, but it was a great atmosphere nonetheless. What a crowd (on a rainy Friday night no less). Thanks to the many who made it a nice evening. The players, parents and coaches have thoroughly enjoyed the season. Aside from too much rain, we couldn't have asked for more. Thanks for your support, it is sincerely appreciated. It has been a great year - the boys have put in a lot of work this year, and the coaches were happy for them to have such a platform on which to perform. The OLPH football varsity championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13th. The 11/12 year old team remains undefeated this season and hopefully the Knoxville game will be made up soon!!

8th grade class retreat to Wesley Woods is scheduled for October 14th-16th. Please keep these students and the teachers in your prayers while they are on this spiritual retreat. The retreat provides an opportunity for the students to reflect, work together and build leadership skills that will help them during the school year.

VIRTUS TRAINING – There will be a VIRTUS TRAINING on Monday, October 12th from 6:30 – 9:30 PM in the OLPH Parish Life Center. Register online at www.virtus.org. VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth, mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville. All parents volunteering or working with children are to complete this program. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers, and boy/girl scout leaders.

THE OLPH LADY RAMS VOLLEYBALL TEAM finished their season this past week with close games during the tournament. The Lady Rams played hard all season long and learned many skills, especially how to serve, pass, set and spike. The 8th graders moving on to Notre Dame are well prepared for tryouts. Good job, Lady Rams!


CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RUNNING RAMS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM! Every girl ran their hearts out with the results to prove it. 3rd through 5th graders ran one mile, while 6th graders ran 2 miles. The OLPH top finishers were: Macy Dearing--placed 1st overall in the 5th grade girls division; Emalyn San Miguel--2nd overall in the 5th grade girls division; Hannah Ingle--4th overall in the 3rd grade girls division. Although not every girl placed in the top five, EACH OLPH RUNNER IMPROVED THEIR TIME! The runners took off 10 seconds to 2 minutes on their times, including Greta Lundquist (3rd grade), Kirsten Hicks, Elizabeth Labbe, Rachel Smith, Natalie Snellgrove (4th grade), Alexia Douglas, Alexis Harris, Madison Kosky, Keely Kutil, Lee Schemel (5th grade), and Katrina Lundquist (6th grade). Coach vickie Stovall wishes to thank the parents for assisting at the meets, encouraging the runners, and allowing her to run with their children. GO RUNNING RAMS!


OLPH FOOTBALL - The 11/12 OLPH Football team defeated Baylor 13-12 in a thrilling come from behind victory. The Rams improved to a 6-0 record with the win. Ricky Ballard and Tyler Enos led the way. Hugh James, Packy Mullin, Addison Hutton and Tanner Webb were standouts. Earlier in the week the Rams defeated Grace 23-7. Alex Darras, Joe Enos, John Tiller, Gehrig Johnson, Zachary Riddle and Chris Allbritten were standouts. The 9/10 Rams came up short against Bright, but played tough. Adams Robinson, Cruz Bautista, and Danny Hodges were standouts.

The virtue for the month of October is "peace" (to calm my fear). "Peace; be still," Jesus said to the stormy sea. The waves, and the disciples in the boat, were instantly calmed, that feeling of calm is freedom from upsetting thoughts or feelings.

THE LIVING ROSARY – The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is Wednesday, October 7th. On that day, OLPH School students will present “The Living Rosary” at 1:30 PM in the school gym. Please join our students for this prayerful presentation.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS will be held on Thursday, October 8th , at 2:40 PM on the football field in recognition of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi which is Sunday, October 4th. Fr. Jim will be blessing the animals – all are invited to bring their pets for this special blessing. Please do not bring your pets into the school buildings; we have students with allergies.


OLPH HOMECOMING GAME AND FESTIVITIES--This year's Homecoming game will be held at Notre Dame High School on Friday, October 9. The Rams will play the Knoxville Episcopalian Saints. The schedule is as follows: 5:30--OLPH 9/10 year old football practice; 6:30--Complimentary hamburger/hotdog cookout with drinks, space jump also set up; 7:30 Kick off, with OLPH Brownie troops presenting the flag and national anthem; halftime events include a flying dog frisbee show, as well as a presentation by the OLPH cheerleaders. The evening is courtesy of OLPH School. Please attend for a night of fun for the whole family--bring a great attitude, but leave your money at home. Hope to see you there!


ATTENTION ALL 6TH, 7TH, AND 8TH GRADERS OF OLPH SCHOOL AND ST.JUDE SCHOOL! The OLPH School 8th grade class is sponsoring a dance on Saturday, October 10. The dance will be held in the OLPH gym, from 7:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. Admission is $5 per student. Proceeds will benefit the OLPH 8th grade class trip to Washington, D.C. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!


THE OLPH SCHOOL CARNIVAL and “Outback Football” Bowl were a success due to the work of many! Thank you to the OLPH Home & School Association for organizing this event and to ALL the parent volunteers who gave of their time so willingly.


HELP EARN 20 FREE BOOKS FOR CLASSROOMS--The maker of "SunnyD" beverages is offering 20 grade-level appropriate books for collecting 20 SunnyD labels. Simply cut off the label from the bottles and turn in to your homeroom teacher or the school office. Extra labels collected will be worth 10 cents apiece, and SunnyD will donate the extra monies to the "Kids in Need Foundation." The due date for labels is October 30th.


OLPH FOOTBALL - The “Outback Football Bowl” was a great success even with one of the three games being cancelled due to weather. The 9/10 year old Rams opened the day with an impressive victory over the "Lightening." Adams Robinson, Sam Stovall, Kevin O'Boyle and Jeremy Harris all had a great game on offense. Danny Hodges, TJ McGee and Curtis Dearing led the defense. The 11/12 year old Rams improved to 4-0 record with an impressive 12-0 victory over McCallie. Joseph Enos, Alex Darras and Ricky Ballard were offensive standouts. Nick Grannan, Packy Mullin and Hugh James were leaders for the defense. Special thanks to the Hamilton Place Outback for providing an outstanding lunch and sponsoring the “Outback Football Bowl.” On Thursday, September 24th the varsity Rams defeated Shenandoah Baptist Academy 20-8 before a large home crowd. Will Mahoney, Tanner Webb, Dean Magat and Brandon Harris led the offense, while Nolan Pawlowski, Thomas McGuire and Chris Knox were solid defensive players. The Rams are now 5-1.

OLPH VOLLEYBALL TEAM – OLPH Volleyball Lady Rams hosted Belvoir Christian on September 21. The A team lost, but exceptional plays were made by Danika Dorris, Madeline Wurm, Grace Signiski, and Mary Rebman. The B team was victorious over Belvoir Christian; Rebekah Burns and Gaby Mullin played a great game. On September 22 the team traveled to Lookout Valley where the A team lost, but Gaby Mullin and Madeline Wurm were once again top notch players. The B team was again in the winner’s column, with all team players doing a great job-Lily, Keri, Hannah, Madeline, Jessica, Gaby, Rebekah, and Nataleigh. Go Lady Rams!


VIRTUS TRAINING – There will be a VIRTUS TRAINING on Monday, October 12th from 6:30 – 9:30 PM in the OLPH Parish Life Center. Register online at www.virtus.org. VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth, mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville. All parents volunteering or working with children are to complete this program. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers, and boy/girl scout leaders.

THE OLPH 8TH GRADE CHEERLEADERS did a great job planning their 1st Pep Rally last week in support of the football, volleyball and cross country teams. Special thanks to the cheerleaders: Anna McIntyre, Grace Signiski, Maris Schrage, Marnie Wall, Samantha Penque, Jordan Vial, Lily Jang and Dominique Lee.

“HATS ON DAY” a nationwide event to raise pediatric cancer awareness was sponsored by the OLPH 8th Grade Class on September 16th. OLPH students collected $396.50 in support of “Hats on Day.”


PARENT ALERT INFORMATION--"Parent Alert" is our mass notification system designed to send messages to parents via phone and email. All parents/guardians need to update their preference contact information on ParentsWeb in order to be alerted of any emergencies, for instance school closing or sport cancellations. These are the steps for updating the Parent Alert Preferences: 1. Log on to your ParentsWeb account, 2. Click on "Web Forms" on the left side of the screen, 3. Click on "Family Demographic Forms", 4. Click on "Custodial Parent Forms"-all custodial parents should be updated, 5. Scroll to the bottom portion of the Custodial Parent Form to the "Preferences" section, 6.
