Calendar Update: Please note this change to the calendar. Parent-teacher conferences will be held the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, February 9th from 3:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. The students will still be dismissed at 11:30 on Friday, February 12-no lunch will be served that day, nor will there be After School Care. We encourage all parents to attend, and we encourage all students to accompany their parents. Teachers will be letting you know how to sign up for specific times. If the afternoon/evening of February 9th does not work for you, please contact the teacher for an alternative day.


St. Cecilia's Closet--OLPH CAG (Creative Arts Guild) will open St. Cecilia's Closet for a weekend sale on January 30-31. If your student has had a growth spurt since August, or is in need of additional winter school uniform gear, drop by after the 5:30 P.M. Mass on Saturday, or the 10:00 or noon Masses on Sunday. Donations of gently used uniforms as well as First Communion attire for both boys and girls are always appreciated.


The 2010 Writing Assessment will be given Tuesday, February 2, 2010. All students in grades 5th and 8th present on this day will participate. Wednesday, February 3 has been designated as a make-up day for students not present at school on February 2. This is a one day make-up only.

Names and addresses needed: As part of our Catholic Schools Week activities, our students will write letters to our country's service men and women. If you have a family member or know of someone who is presently serving in the military, we would love to have their names and addresses. Please send the names and addresses to the OLPH School office or email Kari Ingle at kmingle@catholicweb.com. Students will be writing letters on Wednesday, February 3, so please have the names in by Tuesday, February 2.

Parent Workshops: Two workshops for parents will be held Wednesday, February 3rd:
  • 5th grade parents, 7:00, school library. The title is "Reducing Parent Anxiety", and is being facilitated by Mrs. Judi Phillips, a fellow OLPH parent, as well as an experienced school counselor. Please RSVP to Mrs. Evans or Mrs. Polahar.
  • 6th and 7th grade parents, 6:30, Holy Family Hall. The title is "Effective Communication with Your Child", and is being facilitated by Dr. Steve Chardos. Dr. Chardos is a member of St. Jude Parish and a local licensed psychologist.
  • Babysitting will be provided in the cafeteria.

Spelling Bee Winners--Congratulations to the following students for their placement in the OLPH 2010 Spelling Bee:

Tennessee Science Olympiad--OLPH School middle students will enter the Tennessee Science Olympiad at Chattanooga State on February 27. The Science Olympiad Tournament Goals are to bring science to life, to show how science works, to emphasize problem solving aspects of science and the understanding of science concepts, and to develop teamwork and cooperative learning strategies among students. Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser benefiting the American Heart Association, will take place the week of February 16-19. Students were given a participation/fundraising form through their homeroom. Yearbook information: Are you a local business owner, or do you know a local business owner who would benefit from an ad in the OLPH yearbook? We need your support. For several years our school has provided a yearbook to preserve school memories. To help create a yearbook at a price that all families can afford, we count on support from local business through advertising. PDA's for the Yearbook: The yearbook committee is now taking orders for Public Display of Affection (PDA) ads for the yearbook. Commemorate your special student(s) with an ad in the yearbook. Sunday, January 31: Kick-off

  • · Attend 10:00 A.M. Mass at OLPH Church—OLPH students, please wear your school uniform; you may sit with your family. Students will serve as readers, altar servers, gift bearers, and choir members. Teachers will serve as Eucharistic Ministers.
  • · A Pancake Breakfast will follow 10:00 A.M. Mass, in the PLC. Proceeds will benefit our seminarian, Doug Owens. 7th grade students will help serve the breakfast.

Monday, February 1: Community Day

  • · Service Learning/Community Outreach

* K through 3rd –Salvation Army

* 4th through 6th – Pet Placement Center

* 7th and 8th – Ronald McDonald House

* All students, faculty and staff—Haiti Collection/Red Cross

  • · Community Outreach presentation for all students at 10:00 A.M. in the school gym. A representative from each organization listed above will be present to accept the collected items. David Carroll, news anchor from Channel 3 will be covering the presentation. Parents are invited to attend.
  • "Famous Catholics Contest" will take place Monday through Thursday in the school library. Students in grades 4th through 8th may participate in identifying 20 famous American Catholics. Awards will be given out Friday.

Tuesday, February 2: Student Day

  • · Students and faculty may wear an OLPH “spirit shirt” (from any past OLPH event, including but not limited to, festival/carnival, Ram Run, sports, physical education), with any type of school appropriate, out of uniform pants.
  • · Volunteer Appreciation Brunch in the cafeteria after the 8:15 Mass.
  • · Spiritual Pep Rally at 2:20 in the school gym. Parents are invited to attend.

Wednesday, February 3: National Day / Crazy Hair Day

  • · Students may come to school with a crazy hairdo!
  • · All students will pray the Holy Rosary, 10:00 A.M., in the church, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Dominican Sisters.
  • · Letters will be written, or cards will be made, by all students during Language Arts classes for military personnel or patients at the VA hospital.

Thursday, February 4: Vocations Day / Crazy Sock Day

  • · A “prayer chain” will be made during Religion classes, which may be hung in the church the weekend of February 6th.
  • · Fr. Jim will speak to students in grades 5th through 8th regarding vocations, in Holy Family Hall.
  • · Fr. Mike Creson will share his vocation stories with students in grades Kindergarten through 4th.

Friday, February 5: Mass

  • · Students in grades 3rd through 8th will attend 10:00 A.M. Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, along with students from Notre Dame High School and St. Jude School. Bishop Stika will preside over this Mass. Fr. Ragan Shriver, Executive Director of East Tennessee Catholic Charities, will talk to the students after Mass about the theme of Catholic Schools Week—“Dividends for Life-Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals.”
  • · Phillip Rodgers, local author / illustrator, will give a presentation to students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd, following the 8:15 Mass. The presentation will take place in the PLC; light snacks will be provided. Parents are invited to attend.
  • · Pizza and drinks will be provided to all students for lunch.

Please continue to collect Box Tops, Campbell's Soup labels with bar codes, empty inkjet cartridges, and Tyson food labels. Our Box Tops contest runs until May 13, 2010. Send all items to school with your child or drop off at the school office. So far this school year, over $1,200.00 has been raised by collecting these products.

Mrs. Sabrina Gibson, 4th grade teacher, is running the Scenic City Half Marathon and Charity Challenge on February 27. Mrs. Gibson chose to raise money for the Children's Advocacy Center of Hamilton County. If you would like to make a donation you may go to

FAMILY HONOR 2010 – All 8th grade families in the Chattanooga Deanery are invited to participate in the Family Honor Program on January 29-30th, 2010. Family Honor’s mission is to provide opportunities for parents and children to learn to communicate effectively on important life values, with the special focus on the truth and goodness of human sexuality and the virtue of chastity.   • Catholic Schools Week will kick-off with the 10:00 Mass at OLPH on Sunday, January 31, followed by a Pancake Breakfast in the PLC. OLPH School Students, please wear your school uniform to mass that day. Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will go to seminarian Doug Owens.
  • During the week students will celebrate Community Day, National Day, and Vocations Day.
  • On Friday, February 5th, OLPH School students in grades 3rd-8th will attend 10:00 mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church along with Notre Dame High School and St. Jude School. Thank you to the Tapley family for weeding around the "Peace Pole" in front of school during the Christmas holidays. Spring sports sign-up going on this week--Students in grades 6th-8th who are interested in playing a spring sport (may include track, tennis, baseball, softball, golf), need to see Coach Todd Close this week. Parents are asked to sign the sports participation form and return it to the school office by Thursday, January 21. Students were given participation forms during homeroom; more are available in the school office. Come out middle school students for the "Junior January Jam"! A middle school dance will be held on Friday, January 22, for the 6th-8th grade students from 7 to 10 P.M. The cost is $5.00 per student. As a special treat some of the 8th grade students have formed a band and will be performing. Dance music will also be played. There will be Foosball, ping-pong, air hockey, and of course, plenty of dancing!

Join us for the "January Jam". This fun-filled evening for adults will be held on Saturday, January 23, from 7 P.M. to midnight. The band, "No Big Deal", will be playing some great music. There will be food, Foosball, ping-pong, air hockey, darts, cards, and of course, plenty of dancing--all in the OLPH gym. Advance ticket sales are $15 per person or $25 per couple. Look for an order form in your child's and report card envelope. Drink cards will be available for purchase at the event; soft drinks are free. Each advance ticket sale includes one free drink. Catholic Schools Week--"Dividends for Life--Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals"

  • Catholic Schools Week will kick-off with the 10:00 Mass at OLPH on Sunday, January 31, followed by a Pancake Breakfast in the PLC. OLPH School Students, please wear your school uniform to mass that day. Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will go to seminarian Doug Owens.
  • During the week students will celebrate Community Day, National Day, and Vocations Day.
  • On Friday, February 5th, OLPH School students in grades 3rd-8th will attend 10:00 mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church along with Notre Dame High School and St. Jude School. Bishop Stika will celebrate this mass, and all the priests from the Chattanooga Deanery have been invited. Fr. Ragan Schriver, Executive Director of East Tennessee Catholic Charities, will talk to the students after mass about the theme of Catholic Schools Week: "Dividends for Life--Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals."
  • On Friday, February 5th, grades K-2 will attend mass at OLPH at 8:15; parents are encouraged to join. Following mass there will be light snacks in the PLC and a presentation by local author/illustrator Phillip Rodgers.


Names and address needed--As part of our Catholic Schools Week activities, OLPH students will write letters to our country's service men and women. If you have a family member or know of someone who is presently serving in the military, we would love to write to them. Please send their names and addresses to the OLPH School office or email Kari Ingle at kmingle@catholicweb.com.


St. Cecilia's Closet--OLPH CAG (Creative Arts Guild) will open St. Cecilia's Closet for a weekend sale on January 30-31. If your student has had a growth spurt since August, or is in need of additional winter school uniform gear, drop by after the 5:30 P.M. Mass on Saturday, or the 10:00 or noon Masses on Sunday. Donations of gently used uniforms as well as First Communion attire for both boys and girls are always appreciated.


The 2010 Writing Assessment will be given Tuesday, February 2, 2010. All students in grades 5th and 8th present on this day will participate. Wednesday, February 3 has been designated as a make-up day for students not present at school on February 2. This is a one day make-up only.


Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser benefiting the American Heart Association, will take place the week of February 16-19. Students will be given a participation/fundraising form through their homeroom. The jump roping will take place during their physical education class. Tennessee Science Olympiad--OLPH School middle students will enter the Tennessee Science Olympiad at Chattanooga State on February 27. The Science Olympiad Tournament Goals are to bring science to life, to show how science works, to emphasize problem solving aspects of science and understanding science concepts, and to develop teamwork and cooperative learning strategies among students. Thank you to Kim Thomas and Tracie Blakely for organizing the Catholic Charities "Giving Tree" this year. Due to the generosity of OLPH School and Parish families we were able to help 8 families. We received over 330 gifts for our families which made Christmas Day very special for 26 people.

Winter sports pictures by Lifetouch will be taken Thursday, January 14, beginning at 8:15. Winter sports include basketball (5/6 girls, 5/6 boys, 7/8 girls, 7/8 boys, and basketball cheerleading). These athletes will be given a picture order envelope, which needs to be brought to school on Thursday, with orders prepaid. Checks are made to Lifetouch. Athletes, please remember to bring your sports uniform.

The OLPH "PIP" Program (Parent Involvement and Participation Program) has logged in 3,404.89 volunteer hours that OLPH parents have so generously performed for the first half of the school year. We are very blessed to have such a commitment from our families at OLPH School...Volunteers are not paid--not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.

Nature's Classroom--OLPH School is in the planning stages of developing Nature's Classroom which will provide opportunities for students to make deeper connections with the natural world and inspire a life long sense of wonder. Many thanks to Matt Stovall for the planning and development of Nature's Classroom and to Knights of Columbus Council # 610 for their generous donation to this project.

School Closing Due to Inclement Weather or Illness: In the event of inclement weather, parents/guardians will be notified through Parent Alert, the OLPH website, and local TV stations regarding the closing of school. All local network television stations will be called as early as possible to indicate the closing of the school. Please note that most television stations will not put school openings on the air. If you do not see OLPH listed as closed, we will be open. This procedure also pertains to OLPH School closing due to illnesses, i.e. flu.
