The virtue for the month of March is "kindness" (for all I meet). Jesus came with a new commandment, "Love one another as God loves you." This love we have from God is shown to others through our kindness. As we treat others at home and school kindly, we obey God's command.

The Creative Discovery Museum will conduct a "Math/Science Activity Fest" concentrating on Bio fuels, at OLPH School on Wednesday, March 3, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. There will be nine stations set up in different buildings on campus, relating to science and math topics. Some of the stations include experimenting with building cars that run on solar energy, body imaging to observe living human cells, and the study of why food products can produce energy. This will be an instructional, fun-filled evening, so parents, and students of all grades, please try to attend!

It's Pizza time! Just in time for Lenten dinners, the 8th grade class is selling Little Caesar's Pizza Kits. The class will earn $5 for each pizza kit ordered. As a special bonus, with every Pizza Kit ordered you will receive an OLPH pizza cutter. Orders must be turned in to the office by Monday, March 1, with checks made out to OLPH. The pizza kits will be delivered on Wednesday, March 10, and must be picked up that day, after school, in the "multi-purpose room" next to the gym. Look for an order form coming home with your child or find an 8th grade student to place your order. If you are not familiar with the kits, they contain all the ingredients to make delicious pizza and snacks at home in less than 10 minutes! All items are individually packaged, so what is not used immediately can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer. If you have any questions, please call Tracie Mertel at 423-309-7188.

Thank you to those athletes who turned in their Spring sports registration forms and fees on time. The registration form is on the school website, www.myolph.com under the heading of "Athletics". Intramural Basketball for 3rd and 4th graders: Enough boys and girls have signed up to form four teams. The practices/games will begin Saturday, March 13;the teams will play on Saturday mornings at OLPH gym (March 13, 20, 27, and April 10, 17, and 24).   • Tuition assistance packets for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year, containing all pertinent information on how the program works, are available in the parish office.
  • The packet should be picked up from the OLPH Parish office no later than March 1, 2010, completed and returned to Mrs. Therese Hughes, OLPH parish tuition assistance analyst, no later than March 22, 2010, and a personal meeting should take place with Mrs. Hughes by April 16, 2010. Mrs. Hughes' address and phone number is contained in the tuition assistance packet.
  • An eligible OLPH Parish family is one that has been registered and active in the parish for at least one year. If new to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, that family must have a letter from their former parish stating that they were active and contributing members of that parish. The family should regularly contribute to the Parish offertory using the envelope system with a minimum annual contribution of $350.00.

OLPH Home and School news: An information/news sheet was sent home with each student regarding an upcoming meeting on Monday, March 1st, at 6:30 P.M., in the school library, to discuss the direction of the Home and School Association, as well as nominations for committee chairpersons for the 2010-2011 school year. OLPH School Committee is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 School Committee openings. School Committee meets on a monthly basis and serves as an advisory board to the Pastor and Principal of OLPH School. Membership is open to parents of OLPH students, alumni of OLPH School, parents of alumni, and members of OLPH Parish. Applications are available in the school office and due no later than Thursday, April 1. Please prayerfully consider serving in this very important school ministry. For several years our school has provided a yearbook to preserve school memories. St. Patrick's Irish Ball--The Notre Dame Parent Association (NDPA) invites you to the second annual St. Patrick's Irish Ball. The NDPA's annual fundraiser is a great way to help your child's future school while having fun at the same time. The event will be held on March 13, 2010, at the National Guard Armory on Holtzclaw Avenue, from 7 to 11:30 P.M. The Ball will be an exciting evening of entertainment with dinner, live music, dancing, casino games, and a silent auction. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door. "No Name Calling Week--Speaking Well of Others": February 22 -- 26. Words can be hurtful. This week is aimed at providing students with tools and inspiration to launch dialogues about ways to enhance communication and eliminate bullying. Students will participate in conflict resolution, seminars, journal writing, and reading stories. During lunch time, "mixing it up" and sitting with new friends will be encouraged.

Family Prayer Book--As part of "Family Empowerment Month", the religion department put together a family prayer book for every OLPH School family. This book, which was blessed by Fr. Jim, is a collection of prayers for families to use in many situations; more prayers will be sent home that can be added to the prayer book.

Attention athletes! Spring sports registration forms and fees are due Monday, February 22. The form is also on the school website, www.myolph.com under the heading of "Athletics". Sports include golf, tennis, track, and baseball. Tennis player/parent meeting will be held after school on Wednesday, February 24, in the gym. Coach Mary Pat Haywood will hand out a schedule and discuss expectations. Golf player/parent meeting will be held after school on Friday, February 26th, in the gym. Coach Richard Smith will be on hand to introduce himself, hand out a schedule, and answer questions.

Talent show tryouts
will be held Wednesday, February 24, directly after school, in the music room. If you can sing, dance, act, or play an instrument, and want to share your talent with others, please try out for the Talent Show! Acts should be kept to less than three minutes, so as many students as possible can participate. The Talent Show, sponsored by the Creative Arts Guild, will be held on Thursday, March 11. Intramural Basketball for 3rd and 4th graders: Students in grade 3 and 4, intramural basketball sign-ups are going on now. Forms were sent home with the students; please return the form to the homeroom teachers by Thursday, February 25. Outdoor Classroom Meeting: We are developing and Outdoor Classroom on campus in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation. OLPH eighth graders drew up plans for this project last year in their seventh grade math class. Mr. Matt Stovall used his expertise and resources to survey the area (convent yard) and draw the students' plans professionally. These plans are exhibited in the hallway of the main school building. Stage one of this project is ready to begin--the demolition of the existing area and preparation of the grounds. This is an exciting project which will benefit all of the children for many years to come, but we need your help. We need your talents and resources to help make this project successful. We are planning a meeting for February 25th at 6:30 P.M., in the school library. The OLPH Cub Scouts held their annual pinewood derby in the Parish Life Center on Saturday, February 13th. Fifteen boys participated in the race. The overall first place winner was Jason Oliver (2nd grade), coming in second was Will Bordash (4th grade), and finishing third was Matthew Laws (1st grade). Second grade student Gavin Crane received the award for the "coolest looking car". The boys had a great time designing their cars and competing in the race. Thanks to all of the parents who helped out on "derby day".

Family Honor Program: All 8th grade families in the Chattanooga Deanery are invited to participate in the Family Honor Program, "Real Love, Real Life", on February 26th and 27th. The program will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parish, in the PLC. Registration forms can be downloaded from www.myolph.com. The mission of Family Honor is to provide opportunities for parents and children to learn to communicate effectively on important life values, with the special focus on the truth and goodness of human sexuality and the virtue of chastity. It is presented in a fun and interactive format. You will walk away with a new perspective on the questions, "Who am I" and "What is life for?" Tennessee Science Olympiad: OLPH School middle students will enter the Tennessee Science Olympiad at Chattanooga State on February 27. The Science Olympiad Tournament Goals are to bring science to life, to show how science works, to emphasize problem solving aspects of science and the understanding of science concepts, and to develop teamwork and cooperative learning strategies among students. Mark your calendars for an upcoming workshop: Creative Discovery Museum will conduct a "Bio fuels Workshop" at OLPH School on Wednesday, March 3, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. There will be nine stations set up in different buildings on campus, relating to science and math topics. St. Patrick's Irish Ball--The Notre Dame Parent Association (NDPA) invites you to the second annual St. Patrick's Irish Ball. The NDPA's annual fundraiser is a great way to help your child's future school while having fun at the same time. The event will be held on March 13, 2010, at the National Guard Armory on Holtzclaw Avenue, from 7 to 11:30 P.M. The Ball will be an exciting evening of entertainment with dinner, live music, dancing, casino games, and a silent auction. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door. OLPH School received a $1,000.00 grant from the Richard and Hilda Schults Charitable Gift Account at Schwab Charitable Fund. This grant will help support many ongoing programs that benefit the students at OLPH School.

Tennessee Science Olympiad--OLPH School middle students will enter the Tennessee Science Olympiad at Chattanooga State on February 27. The Science Olympiad Tournament Goals are to bring science to life, to show how science works, to emphasize problem solving aspects of science and the understanding of science concepts, and to develop teamwork and cooperative learning strategies among students. Science Fair Winner--John Tiller, 6th grader at OLPH, was inadvertently left off of the list of winners. John received a FIRST PLACE/BLUE RIBBON in the GENERAL PRIZES category. Good job, John!

A big thank you to the 3rd graders for their help with making the "class banners" which are hanging in the cafeteria. Thanks also to the basketball cheerleaders and their parents for their help in hanging the banners and decorations. Thank you, Ms. Stolpmann, for coordinating this project.

Workshop for parents of 4th graders--On Wednesday, February 10, at 6:30 P.M., there will be a workshop for parents of current OLPH 4th graders, "Who is This Child? Recognizing the Developmental Changes and Transitions of Your Fourth Grader." The workshop is being facilitated by Mrs. Marilyn Chapman who has been an educator and school counselor in our Catholic School System and Hamilton County School System, and she is a parent of a child who is the product of our Catholic School System.

Calendar Update: Please note this change to the calendar. Parent-teacher conferences will be held the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, February 9th from 3:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. The students will still be dismissed at 11:30 on Friday, February 12-no lunch will be served that day, nor will there be After School Care. We encourage all parents to attend, and we encourage all students to accompany their parents. Teachers will be letting you know how to sign up for specific times. If the afternoon/evening of February 9th does not work for you, please contact the teacher for an alternative day.


Tuition assistance information for OLPH Parish members/families

  • Tuition assistance packets for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year, containing all pertinent information on how the program works, are available in the parish office.
  • The packet should be picked up from the OLPH Parish office no later than March 1, 2010, completed and returned to Mrs. Therese Hughes, our parish tuition assistance analyst, no later than March 22, 2010, and a personal meeting should take place with Mrs. Hughes by April 16, 2010. Mrs. Hughes' address and phone number is contained in the tuition assistance packet.
  • An eligible OLPH Parish family is one that has been registered and active in the parish for at least one year; however, if new to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, that family must have a letter from their former parish stating that they were active and contributing members of that parish. The family should regularly contribute to the Parish offertory using the envelope system with a minimum annual contribution of $350.00.

Hispanic Cultural Festival: The volunteers in charge of the Spanish Program have planned an exciting, educational festival to be held Friday, February 12. All students in grades Kindergarten through 8th will watch a power point presentation of Spanish-speaking countries, observe dances, and sample delicious foods. Thank you to all of the Spanish volunteers for organizing this event.


Catholic Schools Week activities were enjoyed by all OLPH students the week of February 1st. The Community Outreach collection was very successful--many needed items were donated to the Salvation Army, Pet Placement Center, and Ronald McDonald House. In addition, over $1,050.00 was raised for the American Red Cross/Haiti Relief. Representatives from these organizations were presented with the donations at an assembly on Monday, February 1. Volunteers were treated to a brunch on Tuesday. Students and teachers prayed the Holy Rosary on Wednesday, and wrote cards and letters to military personnel. Everyone enjoyed wearing OLPH spirit t-shirts to a Spiritual Pep Rally,and crazy hairdos and crazy socks were worn by many. Fr. Jim and Fr. Mike shared their vocation stories with the students, and prayer chains were made in religion classes. The week concluded with the students in grades 3rd through 8th attending Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul, with The Reverend Bishop Stika as celebrant. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd enjoyed a presentation by local author/illustrator Phillip Rodgers. A "Famous Catholic Contest" was held for 4th through 8th graders--the winners were Sabrina Mohler and James West. Thank you to the members of the Catholic Schools Week Committee for organizing this spectacular week.
