Student news: Student Recognition, Jump Rope for Heart, Family Honor, Hand Chimes, World Math Day and World Spelling Day, Makers Club

· Student Recognition--Congratulations to Andrew Hollingsworth who took three seconds off of his 50 meter free style this past weekend at the McCallie District Swim Meet. Way to go, Andrew!
· Jump Rope for Heart--Students in grades Kindergarten through 6th will be participating in "Jump Rope for Heart", a fundraiser sponsored by the American Heart Association. Students were given a brochure/sponsor form to raise funds for this association. Donations in the form of checks are made payable to "American Heart Association," and are due to Coach Close or the school office by February 28. Thank you to all of the donations we have already received! The students began the jump roping event on Monday, February 14.
· Family Honor--All 8th graders in the Chattanooga Deanery are invited to participate in the Family Honor Program on February 25th and 26th. This year Family Honor will be held at OLPH Church in the Parish Life Center (PLC). Registration packets are located in the back of the church and on our website, www.myolph.com. Family Honor's mission is to provide opportunities for parents and children to learn to communicate effectively on important life values, with the special focus on the truth in an interactive format. Participants will walk away with a new perspective on the big questions "Who am I?" and "What is life for?". Forms and payment of $25.00 may be turned in to the OLPH Church office or school office.
· Hand Chimes--Mrs. Angie Carson, OLPH Music teacher, is offering a Hand Chimes class for all OLPH School students in grades Kindergarten through 8th. The class will meet on Thursdays, beginning March 10th, after school until 4:00, and will continue through May 19th. The cost is $50 per student. · World Math Day and World Spelling Day--World Math Day is March 1st, and as in the past couple of years, OLPH students will be competing with students from all over the world. This year World Spelling Day has been added; it is March 3rd, and we are participating in this as well. Students may start practicing at home as they are at school. An account has been set up for each student with their user name and password. The websites are www.worldmathsay.com and www.worldspellingday.com. The same password is used for both websites. Students play at home and at school against other students around the world in live interactive games. Each game lasts for 60 seconds, and students who answer the most questions correctly appear in the Hall of Fame.
· Makers Club--"Makers Club" is an eight week program that allows young people to explore engineering by taking part in directed projects. The Makers Club is planning on having two groups. The 3rd-5th grade group will concentrate on projects that can be built in a single meeting. The 6th-8th grade group will build a multi-week project. There is a charge of $80 per student which covers materials, tools, and fees. There are no refunds for students who miss a week. Due to a required safety class, students may not join after the club begins its official meetings. Meetings will be Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M. The 6th-8th grade group will meet on Mondays in the PLC from 3:30 to 5:00; the 3rd-5th grade group will meet on Tuesdays in the multi-purpose room ("Scout Room" in Madonna Hall) from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M. Student safety is very important; therefore, each child will need leather shoes, and snug fitting clothing that can be damaged (No school uniforms, please). · Pre K through 8th grade Open House--Families interested in attending Pre-K through 8th grade at OLPH School for the 2011-2012 school year are invited to an Open House on Sunday, February 27th after the Noon Mass, in Holy Family Hall. School tours will be given; Pre-K application packets will be available. Information will also be available for any Catholic family who wants to send their child/children to Notre Dame.
· PDA's/Yearbook ads--The yearbook committee is now taking orders for Public Display of Affections (PDA) ads for this year's yearbook. Commemorate your special student(s) with an ad in the yearbook; what a great way to remember kindergarten year, First Communion, and other events! The prices of the ads start at $15 for ⅛ of a page to $100 for a full page ad. · Yearbook Ads for businesses--Are you a local business owner, or do you know a local business owner who would benefit from an ad in the OLPH School yearbook? We need your support! For several years our school has published a yearbook to preserve school memories. To help create a yearbook at a price that all families can afford, we count on support from local businesses through advertising. Ads range in price from $15 for business card size to $100 for a full page. · Mardi Gras Carnival---Catch the Spirit!! The OLPH Mardi Gras Carnival will be on Saturday, March 5th. Come and cheer on the kids at 9:45 as they parade their floats around the school! The Carnival activities begin at 10:00 A.M. and end at 2:00 P.M. Gather up your family for a fun filled day of games, pony rides, climbing wall, inflatables, face painting, Jammin' Jars, and many more kid friendly activities. Tickets will be sold for the activities; the price of one ticket is 50 cents--the number of tickets required varies for each activity. Enjoy yummy carnival food or BBQ (all proceeds on BBQ sales go to the 8th grade; this booth is cash only). Participate in a silent auction and raffle for grand prizes. Show your school spirit by wearing the Mardi Gras Carnival t-shirt (a limited number of t-shirts in various sizes are available for sale in the school office; the cost of a short sleeve t-shirt is $12, a long sleeve t-shirt is $15). We encourage you to wash your t-shirt prior to wear. Can't wait to see you there!!
· OLPH School Committee is now accepting applications for 2011-2012 School committee openings. School Committee meets on a monthly basis and serves as an advisory board to the Pastor and Principal of OLPH School. This is an ideal way for working parents to become more involved in the school and fulfills PIP hour requirements. Membership is open to parents of OLPH students, alumni of OLPH School, parents of alumni, and members of OLPH Parish. Please prayerfully consider serving in this very important school ministry. · "Kiss the Crawfish"--Would you like to see your teacher "Kiss the Crawfish" at our Mardi Carnival this year?! The teacher who collects the most money will have the honor of collecting money from now until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 5, the day of the carnival. Donate your spare change and come to the carnival to see Hank (the crawfish) receive his first kiss! Proceeds benefit all teachers and students through the OLPH Home and School Association. Thank you for joining our fun!
· Sugar 'n Spice--The OLPH Sugar and Spice Brunch returns this spring on Saturday, April 2nd. Celebrating "The Joy of Being You!" Women and girls of all ages, save the date and plan on attending this fabulous event. It brings together our school and parish communities to promote virtue, fellowship, and fun. There will be a guest speaker, auction/raffle, and other surprises. The event will be held in the OLPH School gym; tickets are $20. SPORTS: Spring Sports, Intramural Basketball (grades 3 & 4), Basketball Tournament results, OLPH Booster Club "spirit items"

· Spring Sports practices will begin the week of February 27. OLPH School has boys and girls tennis teams (6th-8th), co-ed track team (5th-8th), and a co-ed golf team (6th-8th). Meets/matches will be posted in upcoming Friday Fanfares and ParentsWeb. Parents of spring sports athletes, please have your fees paid by Monday, February 28, and all necessary paperwork turned in to Coach Close or the school office. GO RAMS!
· Intramural Basketball for grades 3rd and 4th --The dates for the Intramural Basketball program are the following Saturday mornings: March 12, March 19, March 26, April 9, and April 16, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The routine is: 9:00 to 9:30, practice on your half of the court; 9:30 to 10:00, play the team on the other half of the court. Currently, 13 students have signed up; ideally, 16 students would provide enough players for 4 teams of 4 players. So, 3rd and 4th graders, if you are interested, please let Coach Close know as soon as possible! The playing schedule is: March 12--Team A v. Team B, and Team C v. Team D; March 19--Team A v. Team D, and Team B v. Team C; March 26--Team A v. Team C, and Team B v. Team D; April 9--Team C v. Team D, and Team A v. Team B; April 16, Team A v. parents, Team B v. parents, Team C v. parents, and Team D v. parents. If you have questions, please contact Coach Close at tclose1717@bellsouth.net . · Basketball Tournament results--The OLPH Rams basketball season has ended, and our teams competed very strongly in the ISC tournament. Our 7th grade boys team won the championship! 7th grade girls placed second in the ISC! Our 8th grade girls and 5th grade boys placed third! And our 8th grade boys placed fourth! GO RAMS!

Curtis won four matches (two by pin, one by major decision) in the region wide invitational tournament to earn a Silver Medal. Good job, Curt!
