STUDENT NEWS: B.V.M. Awards, OLPH Jr. High Dance, Yearbook sales, Summer Camps, City of East Ridge parade, Art Show

· Sisters of Charity, B.V.M. Christian Living Award--Over the past nine years we have honored the Sisters of Charity by identifying those students from each grade who exemplify the mission and core values of the Sisters of Charity. In accordance with the Mission of the Sisters of Charity, B.V.M., the students chosen to receive this award show faithfulness and love of God to those in the community and to all of God's people. They use the gifts of freedom, education, charity, and justice in their daily virtuous lives. The Sisters will receive a list of names and a picture of the students receiving the award each year. The winners of this award will be announced after the 8:15 A.M. Mass on Friday, May 6.

· OLPH School Jr. High Dance--On Friday, May 6, the OLPH Jr. High students (grades 6, 7, and 8) will have a dance in the PLC from 7:30 to 10:30 P.M. The theme for the dance is "The Last Song"; DJ Terry D will be on hand to provide music. Admission is $5.00 per student. Dress is casual, light snacks and drinks will be served. As this dance is the last one for this school year (and our current 8th graders!), it is for OLPH School students only.

· Yearbook sales--Looking forward to looking back! The OLPH yearbook committee is pleased to announce this year's yearbook, Razzle Dazzle, will be bursting with photos, student portraits, activities, highlights, and of course, space for special autographs. The smiles and memories of your student's year at OLPH will be remembered forever in a yearbook. As you make choices about purchases for your student, please consider the long-term value of a yearbook. For the price of a CD or a few music downloads, your student can have a book that captures forever the special events of this year. A yearbook grows more valuable over time. Make sure your student doesn't miss out on this opportunity! To order a yearbook(s) for your student(s), please complete the Yearbook Order Form, which was given to every student through their homeroom teacher. Extra order forms are available in the school office. "Early Bird" yearbook orders placed by May 18th will be for the special price of $30.00. · Summer Camps--Summer Camp, Let the Fun Begin! fliers and registration information are available on our school website, www.myolph.com and through the school office. Several camps are being offered, and include sports, reading and writing, art, drama, science, and enrichment. · Birthday Celebration of the City of East Ridge--The OLPH Community has been invited to attend the 90th Birthday Celebration of the City of East Ridge on Saturday, April 30. There will be a parade at noon starting from East Ridge Elementary onto Ringgold Road to Tombras Avenue. There will be birthday cake, entertainment, kid's area, vendors, and a car show. The festivities will last until 6:00 P.M. If it rains, the parade will be cancelled, but the festivities will be inside McBrien School.

· Art Show--OLPH Student Art Show will be held in the PLC on Grandparents' Day, Friday, May 13. People's Choice Awards will be selected in three categories: KDG - 2nd, 3rd - 5th, and 6th - 8th. Any student in grades KDG - 8th may enter. Students may enter two 2-D paintings or drawings. Artwork must be original and completely done by the artist during this school year or from Summer Art Camp 2010. Paintings and drawings must be framed. Clay pieces may also be entered. The deadline to turn in the artwork is May 9th--please take your pieces to Mrs. Meinert in the Art Room. Let's make this the biggest art show ever! · Home and School will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, May 9, at 9:00 A.M. · "Operation Amanda"-- "Operation Amanda" is the OLPH School sixth grade project for raising funds for two of Amanda Swartout's favorite organizations, "Amanda's Toy Closet" at LeBonheur Children's Hospital and "Amanda's Acre" at McKamey Animal Center. Blue buckets (Amanda's favorite color was blue!) have been distributed to each homeroom for collecting donations for the organizations noted above. Students, parents, and teachers, please consider giving generously to "Operation Amanda", so we may help provide funds for these worthwhile causes. The blue buckets will be collected Wednesday, May 11, which has been designated "Hats on Day" in memory of Amanda.

· VIRTUS training--VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth. The training is mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville, for all adults volunteering, chaperoning, or working with children. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers and boy/scout leaders. Registration is done online at www.virtus.org . St. Cecilia's Closet is maintained by the Creative Arts Guild. There are also First Communion dresses and jackets for sale in the "Closet". All proceeds from the sales of the used uniforms benefits the arts at OLPH School, including arts-related field trips. The "Closet" is open Monday through Friday, from 7:45 to 3:45. Donations may be dropped off at the school office; a donation receipt can be given upon request.

· OLPH School is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year for students in Pre-K (4 yr. old) through 8th grade. OLPH School has been educating students since 1937. SPORTS: Booster Club elections, Field Day, Spring Sports, Booster Club Matching Fund Drive,OLPH Booster Club "spirit items"

· The Booster Club-- Elections will be held at the OLPH Booster Club meeting on Monday, May 2nd, at 6:30 P.M., in the school library. This election is open to all OLPH Booster Club members. The Interim Secretary, Angela Johnson, can provide details on the duties of each position. · Field Day--The last day of school for students is Wednesday, May 25! On this day, Coach Close organizes outdoor games and activities for all students in grades 1st through 7th (8th graders and Kindergartners have already "graduated"). In addition to the games and activities, the Booster Club will sponsor a cookout for the students, faculty and parent volunteers (order forms will go home with all students after Easter Break). · Spring Sports games and matches are almost over!

o Tennis update: The tennis teams will participate in the end of the season tournament on Tuesday,

o Track update: The track team had another great year! At the Conference Championship meet held at GPS on May 18, OLPH boys placed FIRST and OLPH girls placed THIRD in our ISC!! Individual results are: Chris Allbritten, 1st place, shot put; Lucas Mullin, 1st place, 800 m run; Adams Robinson, 2nd place, 800 m run; Gaby Mullin, 1st place, 400 m run, and 2nd place, discus; Boys 4 x 400 relay (Adams Robinson, Luke Mullin, Chris Allbritten, Joe Enos ), 1st place; Boys 4 x 100 relay (Tim Eubanks, Anthony Smith, Chris Allbritten, Joe Enos), 2nd place; Joe Enos, 2nd place, long jump; Macy Dearing, 2nd place, 800 m run; Emalyn San Miguel, 3rd place, 1600 m run (1 mile); Girls 4 x 100 relay (Liz Labbe, Macy Dearing, Emalyn San Miguel, Gaby Mullin ), 3rd; and Girls 4 x 400 relay (Liz Labbe, Macy Dearing, Emalyn San Miguel, Gaby Mullin), 3rd place. · Booster Club Matching Fund Drive--The Booster Club has received a very generous offer from an anonymous donor in the form of a "matching" fund drive. This OLPH Church and School family has pledged $2000 toward the drive; every dollar OLPH families and Booster Club members donate between now and May 31, will be matched. So, your $25 donation becomes $50; your $50 donation becomes $100, and so on! But, we have to raise the initial $2000 to get the $2000 match. The money will be used for various athletic improvements on the OLPH campus, including softball field, gym locker rooms, volleyball nets and poles, uniform purchases, and equipment replacement. Your donation may be sent to the OLPH School office with the envelope addressed to the OLPH Booster Club, c/o Tom Lundquist or Marina Delaney; please mark the envelope "2011 Spring Matching Fundraiser" so that your donation will be credited toward the match. · There are many OLPH Booster Club "spirit items" available for sale. Please stop by the school office if you would like to purchase an item and help support the OLPH Booster Club. · OLPH Pre-K4 Program--We are excited to announce the opening of a Pre-K4 Program for the 2011-2012 school year and would like to introduce our teacher, Mrs. Jessica Heffern. Mrs. Heffern is a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education and is certified as Highly Qualified teacher. Her experience includes teaching Kindergarten through 2nd grade for Hamilton County, and being a Pre-K teacher at Good Shepherd. Mrs. Heffern is a 1999 graduate of OLPH School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2003. She and her husband, Andy, are members of OLPH Parish.

SPORTS: Booster Club elections, Field Day, Spring Sports, Intramural Basketball (grades 3 & 4),Football Awards Dinner, OLPH Booster Club "spirit items"

· The Booster Club-- Elections will be held at the OLPH Booster Club meeting on Monday, May 2nd, at 6:30 P.M., in the school library. This election is open to all OLPH Booster Club members. The Interim Secretary, Angela Johnson, can provide details on the duties of each position. Contact Mrs. Johnson at roobearangel@comcast.net The Booster Club Interim Officers would like to thank all parents, coaches, and athletes for their dedication and school spirit! Go Rams!

· Field Day--The last day of school for students is Wednesday, May 25! On this day, Coach Close organizes outdoor games and activities for all students in grades 1st through 7th (8th graders and Kindergartners have already "graduated"). In addition to the games and activities, the Booster Club will sponsor a cookout for the students, faculty and parent volunteers (order forms will go home with all students after Easter Break). · Spring Sports games and matches have begun! OLPH School has boys and girls tennis teams (6th-8th), co-ed track team (5th-8th), and a co-ed golf team (6th-8th). Meets/matches are posted in the calendar section of the Friday Fanfare. GO RAMS!

o Tennis update: From Coach Haywood: Update as of April 15--It was a beautiful day to play tennis yesterday! The match against Grace was not our usual match and it was all exhibition play since we were missing some boys and they unexpectedly were missing some girls. The ISC Tennis Tournament will begin Tuesday, May 3rd in Dalton. The top 8 boys and girls will participate. We will keep you posted on the results. Go Rams!!

o Track update: From Coach Workman: The track team is really running smoothly now. The Conference Championship is on Monday, April 18 at GPS. The students are doing really well; Joe Enos came in 1st place in the long jump; Adams Robinson came in 1st in the 800 yard dash; Gaby Mullin came in 1st in the 100 yard dash; OLPH boys relay teams came in 1st in the 4 x 400, and the 4 x 100. The team is ready for the championship and we know that they'll do amazing!

· Intramural Basketball for grades 3rd and 4th --The remaining date for the Intramural Basketball program is Saturday, April 16, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The routine is: 9:00 to 9:30, practice on your half of the court; 9:30 to 10:00, play the team on the other half of the court. The playing schedule is: April 16--9:00, Team A v. parents, 9:30, Team B v. parents, 10:00, Team C v. parents, and 10:30, Team D v. parents. The teams are as follows:

o White--Team A: Madison Messer, Sandra Flores, Greta Lundquist, Anna Qualey; Coach Qualey

o Blue--Team B: Mallory Hatala, Emily McPeak, Jason Oliver, Hannah Ingle; Coach Ingle

o Gray--Team C: Kathleen Hillman, Holli Covey, Glory Perry, Keagan Creel; Coach Creel

o Black--Team D: Rachel- Anne Scalla, Bernard Lisy, Jane Anne Haywood, Julia Raabe; Coach Raabe

· OLPH Football Annual Awards Dinner will be Saturday, April 16th, at 6:30 P.M., at Finley Stadium. The featured speaker is Russ Huesman, Head Coach of the Chattanooga Mocs football team. The dinner will be catered by O'Charley's Restaurant. Dress for OLPH football players is coat and tie. · There are many OLPH Booster Club "spirit items" are available for sale. Please stop by the school office if you would like to purchase an item and help support the OLPH Booster Club. These are great items for athletes, students, and all family members! Also, the OLPH t-shirts for sale by the Booster Club may be used for P.E. classes starting this year.
