STUDENT NEWS: Student Recognition, Speech and Hearing, Altar Server Training

· Student Recognition: Congratulations to Ross Norman, 2nd grader at OLPH School. His summer baseball team, the Boynton Bandits, won the Dizzy Dean 6-year-old World Series in Rome, GA.!

· Speech and Hearing--Speech and Hearing Screenings will be held at OLPH on August 30. According to good health practices and state guidelines, every student must be screened at least once while in grades K-2. Your child's teacher may recommend an evaluation if he or she sees a need. Forms are available through the school counselor, Mrs. Jenny Hetzler. Please contact her at jennyhetzler@catholicweb.com for more information.

· Altar Server Training--Training for students in grades 4th - 8th who are interested in being altar servers will be held September 12th - September 15th from 3:30 to 4:30. · Ram Run Sponsorships: The Ram Run is off and running! We would like to THANK those who sent in donations for sponsorship for this event. We appreciate your support to OLPH. The deadline for the sponsorships is September 9. This is an area we are strongly focusing on at this time to make the Ram Run a success! · VIRTUS training--VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth. The training is mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville, for all adults volunteering, chaperoning, or working with children. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers and boy/scout leaders. Registration is done online at www.virtus.org . VIRTUS training sessions will be held on these dates: OLPH Church PLC: Monday, September 19, 6:00 P.M.; St. Jude Church, Thursday, September 22, 1:00 P.M.; and St. Jude Church, Thursday, November 1, 6:00 P.M.

· Scrip Program--SCRIP is a no-selling program that allows families to raise funds for OLPH while doing regular shopping. Gift cards are purchased at face value from OLPH Scrip and redeemed for face value at the store. The retailer sends OLPH a rebate check. If you already have an online account, you are ready to go. Please drop off your payment to the school office by Tuesday mornings (or use Presto Pay automatic online bank draft). To register a new account:

St. Cecilia's Closet is accepting donations of uniforms; they may be dropped off in Holy Family Hall or the school office. Sports: Fall Sports, Football News

· The fall sports season has begun at OLPH School! Game dates and times are posted on ParentsWeb, our website calendar, and on the calendar portion of each Friday Fanfare. Come cheer on our athletes as they participate in Cross Country, Football, and Volleyball. Go Rams!!

· Football News: The Rams continue to have success on the gridiron. On August 22, OLPH defeated Christian Heritage 22 to 6. Ricky Ballard had over 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Addison Hutton and Alex Darras connected on a 48 yard TD pass. Tyler Enos lead all tacklers. Michael Quatrano had an interception, and Nick Grannan led the offensive line. The U12 Rams defeated Signal Mountain 16 to 6 (Adams Robinson, standout), while the U10 Rams defeated Red Bank 8 to 0 in last week' s jamboree. The U8 Rams open the season on August 27 at Finley Stadium at 11:00 A.M. against Boynton. Go Rams!

News of Interest: Knights of Columbus Labor Day festivities

· Knights of Columbus Council 610 is hosting the 69th Annual Labor Day Picnic and Family Outing on September 5, 2011 from 9:00 A.N. to 5:00 P.M. at Camp Columbus Bork Pavilion. Activities include a White Elephant Yard Sale, Charity Bingo, and games. BBQ plates will be served from 11:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and consists of your choice of beef, pork, chicken or ribs, accompanied by potato salad, beans, slaw, bread, and a beverage. The price is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Other concessions will also be available. Camp Columbus is located on Camp Columbus Road off Hixson Pike in Dallas Bay. · Nature's Place Outdoor Classroom Work Days--Matt Stovall and Bob Corte will be working on the stage for Nature's Place Saturday, August 20 at 9:00 A.M., and Saturday, August 27. A few extra hands with setting posts, etc. would be appreciated. Rob Summitt and his Scout Troop will be staining the fence soon and Bob Corte is working on the signage. If you would like to help with either of these projects please contact Matt Stovall at 423-667-4762 or matt.stovall@bwsc.net . Also contact Mr. Stovall if you have access to cedar trees to help finish this project. OLPH School students are already using Nature's Place--what a great learning experience for all of the children. This is a good way to earn PIP hours while enjoying the outdoors and being a part of Nature's Place at OLPH School.

· Scout Registration Night--OLPH will be holding a Scout Registration night on Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 in the PLC. All girls (K - 8th) and boys (1st - 8th) interested in Scouting are invited to attend. OLPH Boy Scouts will be demonstrating a raft assembly for an upcoming race on the Hiwassee River. · Home and School meeting/Open House--The first Home and School meeting for the 2011-2012 school year will be Tuesday, August 16. Door prizes will be awarded at the meeting; teachers will be introduced; and Ram Run will be discussed, to name a few items on the agenda. The 8th graders will provide babysitting in the cafeteria--Home and School will provide pizza and drinks for the kids. The Open House will begin immediately following the Home and School meeting (approximately 6:00). All parents are invited to visit their student's classrooms and meet their teachers.

Sports: Cross Country, Football

· Cross Country runners! There will be a parent's information meeting on Monday, August 14, at 3:30, in Mrs. Ingle's second classroom (in the main school building). Participants are also welcome! Practice will start Tuesday, August 15th. Meet at 3:30 in the gym (remember to bring a water bottle). From Coaches Stovall and Ingle.

· Football--The OLPH football team is off to a great start! Last weekend at the "Border Wars" tournament the Rams went 3-0 defeating Loftis, Whitwell, and East Lake. The team followed up the impressive showing with a solid victory over Signal Mountain Middle School at Tuesday night's Jamboree held under the lights at Notre Dame. The Rams and South Pittsburg tied, with the Rams getting the edge on yardage. Team standouts thus far include Ricky Ballard, Alex Darras, Tyler Enos, and Addison Hutton. The coaches encourage all to come out this season to cheer on your Rams football team. First home game is August 18, 6:00, against powerful Christian Heritage.
