Catholic Schools Week schedule:

o Sunday, January 29--"Kick-off Mass", 10:00 A.M., OLPH Church--Students are encouraged to wear their school uniform to Mass. The School Choir will sing, students will take part in the readings, 8th graders will take up the offering, a Pre-K family will bring up the gifts, and teachers will serve as Eucharistic Ministers and carry in the Virtue Banner and items to symbolize Catholic Education. 8th graders have written essays, "What OLPH Means to Me", and one essay will be read during Mass.

§ Nature's Place work day, Noon to 5:00. Matt Stovall and Bob Corte will be leading efforts to complete some projects. Items needed include wheelbarrows, shovels, hand sanders, gloves, dust masks, etc. If you can help please contact Matt Stovall at matt.stovall@bwsc.net or

§ Notre Dame High School students will read to Pre-K through 4th graders beginning at 9:15.

§ Spelling Bee for students in grades 5th-8th will be held at 2:00 in the gym.

§ Home and School will provide a special treat for all students during lunch.

§ "Silly Hat Day". Students and teachers may wear a silly hat to school in memory of Amanda Swartout. Monetary donations will be accepted and given to LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

o Thursday, February 2--

§ "Baby Shower for Jesus" will be held at 2:00 in the cafeteria. Students in grades 1st-4th are asked to bring in a baby item for Catholic Charities/Crisis Pregnancy Center.

§ During religion classes students will write letters of encouragement and cards for our seminarians.

§ A "Graffiti Wall" with postings of student writings, "What I want to be when I grow up," is on display on the bulletin boards in the cafeteria.

STUDENT NEWS: Student Recognition

· Student Recognition--Congratulations to OLPH 8th grade student Alex Darras who has been rated the top middle school kicker in America according to prokicker.com. During the course of the OLPH football season (record of 12-1), Alex put one of every two kickoffs into the end zone, made field goals from beyond 40 yards, and missed only one of 32 extra point attempts. The OLPH football coaches nicknamed Alex "D1", because they believe that on Alex's current path, Division 1 football is in his future. Wow!!!

Weight training for football

· Little Rams Basketball Clinic--OLPH Booster Club is sponsoring a basketball skills clinic for 1st through 4th graders of OLPH School and local parishes. The clinic will be held the following Saturday mornings: Feb. 11, 18, 25, and March 3; 8:30 to 9:45 for 1st and 2nd graders, and 10:00 to 11:15 for 3rd and 4th graders. The cost is $45 per student, which covers the four clinics and a t-shirt. Weekly participation is available for $14 per session, with the fee payable that day. Registration forms were sent home with OLPH School students; the form will be available on the school website, www.myolph.com within the next week. Questions may be addressed to the OLPH School Office, 423-622-1481.

· OLPH spirit items for sale--The Booster Club has OLPH spirit items for sale, including water bottles ($3), athletic towels ($7), and ball caps ($12). OLPH t-shirts are also for sale for $10; these t-shirts may be worn to P.E. class. There are a few hoodies for sale ($20) in the following sizes: Adult XL, Adult L, Adult M, and

· Weight training for football players--Coach Josh Sellers and the football coaching staff of Notre Dame High School are offering a program to enhance speed and strength. This carefully monitored program is designed specifically for middle school aged boys/young men. The weight training aspect is geared toward technique. The program will have no cost for OLPH football players (both new and former). All current 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to attend. The program is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 until 6:30, and on Saturdays from 11:00 until 1:00 (meet in the Vallaro Center/Makus Weight Center at Notre Dame High School). The program will continue until the start of spring football. Participants are encouraged to make two of the three sessions per week; however, the coaches are aware and understand that other events may conflict which may cause participants to miss some sessions. · Illness Prevention: Sarah Sloan, Epidemiologist for the Hamilton County Health Department, has asked us to remind all parents, guardians, students, and employees, of the best method of illness prevention--good hand washing. In addition to hand washing, use of hand sanitizer is very helpful. Also, cleaning hard surfaces with a bleach and water solution (one part bleach to 10 parts water, mixed fresh daily), is the best way to disinfect.

For safety reasons, students may not walk across the parking lots without adult supervision. The "ramp door" near the cafeteria is open every school day at 7:00 A.M. Before Care is available in the cafeteria from 7:00 to 7:30 A.M. for $1 per student. Students dropped off between 7:30 and 7:45 are to wait in the cafeteria (at no charge) for their classroom to open at 7:45.

· Inclement weather policy (page 10 of the Parent/Student Handbook)--In the event of inclement weather, parents/guardians will be notified through Parent Alert, the OLPH website, and local TV stations regarding the closing of school. All local network television stations will be called as early as possible to indicate the closing of the school. Please note that most television stations will not put school openings on the air. If you do not see OLPH listed as closed, we will be open. This procedure also pertains to OLPH School closing due to illnesses, i.e. flu.

· Open House – OLPH School will have an Open House for prospective Pre-K and Kindergarten students on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. in the School Library and Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 6:00 P.M. in the Kindergarten Classroom or the Pre-K Classroom. There will be an All School Open House for prospective families in grades Pre-K through 8th Grade on Sunday, March 11, 2012 after the 10:00 A.M. Mass. OLPH spirit items for sale

· Spring sports sign-up--The scheduling of spring sports (track & field, golf, tennis, baseball, softball) will take place Tuesday, January 17, 2012; therefore, students interested in participating in any of these sports need to notify Coach Todd Close by 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday, January 17. Coach Close may be contacted at tclose1717@bellsouth.net, if you have any questions. The sign-up sheet is available on our website, www.myolph.com under Athletics, and in the school office.
· Pictures by Lifetouch--Basketball teams and basketball cheerleader group pictures will be taken on Wednesday, January 18, beginning at 8:15 A.M. All basketball players and cheerleaders need to bring their uniforms for the pictures. Order envelopes were given out to parents at a recent basketball game; the team pictures need to be pre-ordered and prepaid for--the cost is $14.00. Checks are made payable to Lifetouch.
· Little Rams Basketball Clinic--OLPH Booster Club is sponsoring a basketball skills clinic for 1st through 4th graders of OLPH School and local parishes. The clinic will be held the following Saturday mornings: Feb. 11, 18, 25, and March 3; 8:30 to 9:45 for 1st and 2nd graders, and 10:00 to 11:15 for 3rd and 4th graders. The cost is $45 per student, which covers the four clinics and a t-shirt. Weekly participation is available for $14 per session, with the fee payable that day. Registration forms were sent home with OLPH School students; the form will be available on the school website, www.myolph.com within the next week. Questions may be addressed to the OLPH School Office, 423-622-1481.
· OLPH items for sale--The Booster Club has a OLPH spirit items for sale, including water bottles ($3), athletic towels ($7), and ball caps ($12). OLPH t-shirts are also for sale for $10; these t-shirts may be worn to P.E. class. There are a few hoodies for sale ($20) in the following sizes: Adult XL, Adult L, Adult M, and Youth S. Please contact Hannah Jones at olphschooloffice@catholicweb.com if you would like to purchase any of these items. Checks are made payable to OLPH Booster Club; we are not able to provide change for cash purchases, so please send in the exact amount if using cash.
