STUDENT NEWS: 8th grade fundraiser, Junior High dance
·         8th grade fundraiser--The OLPH 8th grade students are coordinating a CARWASH on Sunday, September 23rd after the 7:30, 10:00, and 12:00 masses behind Madonna Hall. Proceeds will be used to reduce the cost of their 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C.  in the spring. Thank you for your support!
·         Junior High dance--Junior Highs students (6th, 7th and 8th graders from OLPH and St. Jude) are invited to a dance, Neon Night, on Saturday, September 29. The dance will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Sylvan Street in Chattanooga. The admission is $5.00 per student. Light snacks will be served; frozen drinks will be sold for $1. SCHOOL NEWS: Campus Improvement Day, Additional Out of Uniform Day, Oktoberfest
§  Campus Improvement Day--OLPH Home and School will be having a Campus Improvement Day for weeding and planting on Saturday, September 22. Bring your family and your community spirit and help us prepare for our 75th Anniversary Celebration events in October! The first shift will be from 8:00 A.M. until Noon and the second from one until five. Drinks and pizza will be provided for the volunteers--please respond to Cissy West at cwest@catholicweb.com or 423-622-1481 with the number of lunches you will need and the shift you would like to work. Please meet on the front lawn of the school at the beginning of the shift. If possible, please bring any of the following items:
§  work gloves, hat , sunscreen, bug spray, pad for kneeling
§  shovel and/or spade, trowel, hand-held clippers, wheel barrow
§  radio
§  If you would like to help, but are unable to attend, please let us know, and we can assign a task for you to tackle on your own schedule.
§  Additional Out of Uniform Day--OLPH School will have an additional $1 out of uniform day on Thursday, October 4, 2012. The monies collected will be given to Fr. Jim to purchase a special crucifix for the Children's Liturgy. More details to come!
·         Oktoberfest--OLPH is fortunate to be a part of the Oktoberfest celebration weekend at the Chattanooga Market, October 13 -14. This is an awesome fundraising opportunity in a festive atmosphere and a great chance for you to earn your PIP hours!
o   Shifts are available for set-up Friday, October 12 at 5pm, in two hour shifts from 9am to 7 pm Saturday, and from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.
o   The easiest way to sign up for a time slot is to go to: http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/104103896360102 . You don't have to sign up for an account with the site. The site will ask for your email address (only used to send you a reminder) and then take you to the calendar to sign up for a specific time and job. When you click on a day, you will be able to see which jobs are still open (you can even click on the word "filled" to see who is already signed up). Then click "sign up here!" for the slot you want, and "save and close" at the bottom. Before you exit, it will ask for your name and phone # please do add that, and check the little box, if you don't want advertising emails to follow. You're done! You will get an email saying you have signed-up, and another closer to event time as a reminder.
o   If you are going to be out of town, you can still help! We can use donations of canned soda and bottled water. Chattanooga Market allows us to bring in Coke products only.  We can also use paper products. Contact Cissy West at cwest@catholicweb.com for specifics.
o   The one mile Family Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 A.M. and the 5K will begin at 9:00 A.M.  The races will start in front of the First Tennessee Pavilion. Registration forms are available in the school office in the back of the church. After the Run/Walk you can stroll through the Chattanooga Market for special treats and handcrafted goods. OLPH School has the BEST brat booth at the Chattanooga Market so please find our booth and buy a brat! Oktoberfest is our school's biggest fundraiser, and we really hope that you will be there!! SPORTS NEWS: Soccer sign-ups
·         Soccer sign-ups--Soccer season is just around the corner. OLPH School has two co-ed soccer teams--5th/6th graders, and 7th/8th graders.  The deadline for signing up is Friday, October 5th. If teams are full by this date, no late sign-ups will be accepted.  The sign-up form is available in the school office as well as on our website, www.myolph.com under "Athletics". Soccer coaches are needed for the co-ed 5th/6th grade team!! If you are interested in coaching, please contact Coach Close at tclose1717@bellsouth.net

STUDENT NEWS: Picture Day, 8th grade fundraiser
·         Picture Day--Lifetouch will be taking student pictures and class homeroom pictures on Monday, September 17. Students in grades PreK through 7th will be in their school uniforms; 8th grade only is out of uniform. All students were given information on purchasing the portraits. Fall sports will also have their team pictures taken-volleyball, cross country, football cheerleaders, and football (Coach Dearing may have separate pictures taken as well).  Athletes, please bring your uniform to school that morning.

SCHOOL NEWS: Home and School meeting, Campus Improvement Day, Oktoberfest
§  Home and School meeting--ATTENTION!!  The Home and School Board would like to invite everyone to the next Home and School meeting being held on Wednesday, September 19th at 6:00 in the school gym.  This month's meeting will be very informative. October is a very busy month for OLPH School and Parish and we want to keep you updated. Babysitting will be provided in the PLC; pizza will be provided for the children.  There will be a $25.00 Scrip card give away! We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday. Here are the topics being discussed:
§  Teresa Hale, Technology Coordinator, and Hannah Jones, Administrative Assistant, will be guest speakers, demonstrating and answering questions about ParentsWeb.
§  Cissy West will be giving a power point presentation regarding the Scrip Program. There have been some changes in the program that we do not want you to miss out on.
§  There will be a representatives speaking about Ram Run and Trunk or Treat.

·         Volleyball News-- The JV won impressively in 2 sets and improved their record with a victory over CCS on Friday September 7th but suffered a setback with a 2 set loss to Boyd on Monday the 10th.  Their record currently stands at 2 - 5.  The Varsity fought hard but suffered a couple more setbacks with losses to CCS and Boyd, falling to 0-7 for the season.  The match vs. St. Jude has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 26th, and it will be held at Notre Dame!  This will be the final regular season match, and we are hoping for a huge turnout.  Please put it on your schedule and come on over.  In the mean time we have matches on September 17th vs. BCA at BCA, September 21st vs. Silverdale at Silverdale and on September 24th we will have a varsity only match vs. Oakwood at OLPH.  Come out and support your Lady Rams as they continue to improve!  MARY QUEEN OF VICTORY, PRAY FOR US!            
·         Cross Country News--The OLPH Rams Cross Country competed in their second race on Monday. All runners completed the race and improved their times (official times have not been posted yet). Way to go!!    
·         Football News--The Rams football team continues to improve. Allan Ubas, Quinn Summers, and Tommy Kulik remain standouts. The Rams defeated McCallie 20-0 and Baylor 7-0 in hard fought games. Adams Robinson, Hogan Walker, Sam Stovall, and Curtis Dearing were forces on both sides of the ball. The football program thanks the cheerleaders and school for the great Pep Rally held last week. The Rams next home game is Thursday, September 20, 5:00 P.M., against Boyd Buchanan.

STUDENT NEWS: Cafeteria News, Ram Run forms, Picture Day
·         Cafeteria News--Our cafeteria workers have seen several unopened food items being thrown away by the children, including foods they bring from home. With the current national emphasis on nutritional school lunches and amount of discarded food (wastefulness), we ask that parents speak with their children about bringing home their unwanted items, or saving them for an after school snack.

SCHOOL NEWS: Chick-fil-A, Sponsorships for Ram Run 2012, Oktoberfest
·         Chick-fil-A Spirit Night--We have four "Chick-fil-A Spirit Nights" this school year; the first one is Thursday, September 13 from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Chick-fil-A on Gunbarrel Road (in front of Target). OLPH School will receive 15% of sales from handouts that OLPH families turn in--these handouts will be sent home with the students on that Thursday. The teacher with the most handouts turned in will win a Chick-fil-A Nugget tray for their classroom! Hope to see you there!
·         Sponsorships for Ram Run 2012--Registration is OPEN for this year's OLPH Ram Run on October 13 - you can register online at: http://www.active.com/running/chattanooga-tn/chattanooga-oktoberfest-ram-run-2012 The Ram Run Committee is still looking for sponsorships and in-kind donations, such as food and snacks for the runners and door prizes. If you own a business or work for a company that might be interested in donating this year, please email Dawn McAbee at dvscavett@yahoo.com for details on how to participate. The deadline for sponsorships has been extended to Friday, September 14.

SPORTS NEWS: Cross Country News, Volleyball News, Fall Sports, Tennis Camp, 
Soccer Challenge
·         Cross Country News-- The times are in for last week's Cross Country meet. Congratulations to Brendan Yemm, Hannah Ingle, Greta Lundquist, and Emma McNabb. They ran the Middle School two-mile race for the first time and each had a time of less than 20 minutes. In the Elementary one-mile race, Rachel-Anne Scalla came in first place overall. Kassidy Barta, Jane Anne Haywood and Maia Delaney completed the one-mile race in less than nine minutes.  Andrew Phillips, Drew Ingle and Collin Scalla also ran the one-mile boys race in under nine minutes. The Cross Country team has their next meet Monday, September 10. Go Rams!!
·         Volleyball News--The 2012 Middle School volleyball season is in full swing and the OLPH Lady Rams Volleyball Teams are improving every day. The JV record is 1-4, with the win over Lookout Valley, and several other close matches. The Varsity record is 0-5. Please come out and cheer on the Lady Rams!! Upcoming matches are Monday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 12, both at OLPH, with start times at 4:30/5:30. Go Rams!!
·         Fall Sports--Come out and cheer on the OLPH Rams fall sports teams!!! Cross Country, Football, and Volleyball teams have begun play. All games are posted on the calendar part of the Friday Fanfare, on ParentsWeb, on our website calendar and on our website under the heading "Athletics."
·         Tennis Camp--Mr. Eric Voges, who is one of the best tennis coaches of the southeast, is offering tennis clinics this fall. He is generously donating some of the proceeds to OLPH's tennis team. If you are interested you may contact Mr. Voges at evoges@mccallie.org or Mrs. Mary Pat Haywood (OLPH's tennis coach) at 706-459-6391.
·         Soccer Challenge--Knights of Columbus Council #8576 is sponsoring our local Youth Soccer Challenge on Saturday, September 8th, at 2:00 P.M.  at the St. Jude School soccer field during the St. Jude Church picnic. All boys and girls ages 10-14 are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Winners will progress through local, district, and state competitions. The competition involves penalty kicks with designated scoring zones based on accuracy. Appropriate footwear should be worn. Participants are required to have signed parental consent which is available at registration (Please note that registration closed at 2:30).
