STUDENT NEWS: Picture Retakes, Retro Day, Yard Sale
·         Picture Retakes--Lifetouch Studio will be at OLPH Tuesday, October 30, at 8:15 A.M., for those students who want their portrait retaken from the September 17 portrait day. Also, students who were absent on September 17, or enrolled at OLPH after that day, will have their picture taken. Portrait information for these students was sent home through the homeroom teachers. Additional information sheets are available in the school office.
·         Retro Day--Throughout October, our students have been learning about and celebrating the 75 years of OLPH's existence. To understand the students of yesterday, each grade level took a decade to research and share. On Wednesday, October 31st, we will be culminating our month of studies with "Retro Day." The students and staff may come to school dressed to represent their decade. At 9:45 all classes will meet in the gymnasium to present and share some of their learning of what the students of OLPH Past experienced. Parents are welcome to attend the 9:45 assembly.
·         Yard Sale--The 8th grade will be putting on a yard sale to raise money for their Washington, D.C. trip in the spring. The yard sale will be held Saturday, November 3, in the church parking lot. If you would like to donate items for the sale, they may be dropped off in the gym on Friday, November 2, at 8:00 A.M. or 3:20 P.M. All questions about the Yard Sale are to be addressed to Kat Green at 423-718-2690.

SCHOOL NEWS: Trunk or Treat, Priesthood Sunday, Scrip Sunday,
Thanksgiving Food Drive, Chatti Gras
·         Trunk or Treat--OLPH School will have Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 27th after the 5:30 Mass in the parking lot behind the gym. Costumes, flashlights and decorated cars are welcome to join us for this fun event sponsored by the OLPH Home and School Association. Candy will be passed out from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. and Fr. Jim has asked that children wearing costumes to Saturday Mass not wear masks or makeup during Mass. For more information contact Jennifer Flowers at jenniferflowers867@yahoo.com or 423-504-4841.
·         Priesthood Sunday--A note from The Most Reverend Richard F.  Bishop Stika, Bishop of Knoxville--Please join me on this special day of October 28, 2012, Priesthood Sunday, in praying for our priests, in praising God for their fidelity and their generosity. As your bishop I urge you to make your appreciation for your parish priest known. A simple note, a smile or a phone call to assure him of your loving care and gratitude for his presence in the life of your local church will go a long way to serve the greater good of our wonderful and growing Catholic Church.
·         Scrip Sunday--Starting your Christmas shopping? Sunday, November 4, and every first Sunday of the month will be "Scrip Sunday." Scrip cards will be available for purchase after all weekend Masses in Holy Family Hall. Shopping with Scrip supports OLPH School without any fundraising….it doesn't get any better than that! All you have to do is purchase your favorite retailers' Scrip cards at face value and use them in place of cash, checks, or credit cards, for purchases you were going to make any way. The retailers send us a cash discount and we split the profits with you 50/50. Purchase Scrip gift cards for ALL your shopping needs- gas, groceries, gifts, dining out, home improvements, etc.--come by our table after Mass to shop from inventory. ·         Thanksgiving Food Drive--OLPH School and Parish is helping Catholic Charities with their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. We are collecting for 250 families this year; please send in 5 to 10 cans/boxes of your food item. If you do not have time to shop, cash donations are gladly accepted, and we will do the shopping.  Boxes for the food will be in the main hallway of the school, and Holy Family Hall. Please bring the food items by Friday, November 16th. The food baskets will be assembled on Sunday, November 18th, at 2:00 P.M. in the OLPH Parish Life Center (PLC). If your family would like to help assemble the food baskets please contact Cissy West at cwest@catholicweb.com or 423-622-1481. Thank you for helping us help others.

·         Chatti Gras--SAVE THE DATE FOR CHATTI GRAS--This city-wide event brought our Catholic Community together for one fun-filled celebration last year, and it is back to stay! Mark your calendars now for Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center. OLPH, Notre Dame, and St. Jude will be hosting this Mardi Gras-style evening for adults to enjoy dinner, music and dancing, and a silent auction. Tickets are now on sale at www.Chattigras.com or in the Development Office (see Cissy West). The price is $60 per ticket through December 31. After December 31, the price goes up to $75 per ticket. Last year's event sold out, so be sure to get your tickets early!!

STUDENT NEWS: Ram Run results, Student Recognitions, Lifetouch Pictures
·         Ram Run student results-- Competing in a 5K race takes a lot of endurance, determination, and ability. Congratulations to the following OLPH School students who did an awesome job competing in the 14 and under age group divisions: Our female student runners earned the top five places in the 14 and Under Female Division: Rachel-Anne Scalla (26:16), Morgan Hicks (27:28), Georgia Wolf (30:11), Maia Delaney (30:28), and Greta Lundquist (31:23); our male student runners earned the top two places in the 14 and Under Male Division: Adams Robinson (24:40), and Nicolas Robinson (26:15). ·         Student Recognition-- Lorelei Tinney, 2nd grade at OLPH School, and Lauren Collins, 8th grader at OLPH School, will be dancing in the Chattanooga Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. The shows will be at the Tivoli in December. Congratulations girls!
·         Student Recognition-- Cayci Holt, 5th grader at OLPH School has landed the role of "Pepper" in the upcoming Spotlight Series production of Annie for the Chattanooga Theatre Center. The shows will take place in December. Congratulations Cayci!
·         Lifetouch Pictures--Lifetouch picture proofs were sent home with the students before Fall Break (pictures were taken on September 17). Order forms were due back to your child's homeroom teacher by Friday, October 19--if you have not returned yours, please do so by Monday, October 22; checks are made payable to Lifetouch. You may also order online through Lifetouch--all instructions are included on the order form. Questions about ordering should be addressed to Lifetouch at 423-892-1332. If you are not pleased with your child's proof picture, or your child missed picture day on September 17, retakes will be taken on Tuesday, October 30. To have your child's picture retaken, please write "Retake" on the picture envelope and return to the homeroom teacher.

SCHOOL NEWS: Parent/Teacher Conferences, Landscape Improvement Days, Trunk or Treat, Oktoberfest, Parent Retreat & Dinner, Nature's Place
·         Parent/Teacher Conferences--Conferences are on Wednesday, October 24th (3:00 to 7:00, approximately). Times should be scheduled with the teachers. We encourage ALL parents and students to attend. Report cards will be given at that time. Because these conferences will be going until late Wednesday evening, there will be a half day of school on Friday. Students should be picked up by 11:30 on Friday, October 26th--no lunch will be served, and after care is not open.
·         Report Cards--Report Cards for the first nine weeks will be given to parents during Conferences on Wednesday, October 24. All accounts must be paid (Lunch, After Care, before Care, tuition, sports uniforms) in order for the students to receive their report card.
·         Landscape Improvement Days--Vikki Mills has scheduled two work days to plant bulbs, finish a bit of weeding and add additional mulch to some beds to help beautify our campus. If you are able to come this Sunday, October 21 from 1:30 to 4:30, or stay after 11:30 dismissal on Friday, October 26 (bring a change of clothes for your students, and let us know if you need a Subway sandwich for lunch), please contact Cissy West at cwest@catholicweb.com and let her know you will be there. Remember to bring work gloves and any tools that you may have for these tasks. Pray for good weather!!

From those who donated sodas and plated for the Brat Booth to those who were up at the crack of dawn setting out cones for the race, all your efforts are very much appreciated. It truly was a team effort, and we thank you for whatever part you played. A very special thank you goes out to Larry McInturff, who mastered the grill all day Saturday and Sunday and to Mary Curtiss, who put in so many hours on all the details before, during and after Oktoberfest. Your "Ram Spirit" was really shining!! Thank you!
·         Parent Retreat & Dinner--A Parent Retreat and Dinner, Who's Coaching Your Child?, will be held at Notre Dame High School on Sunday, October 28, from 1:30 to 5:00. Fr. Bertin Glennon ("What is Your Game Plan for Getting Your Kids to Heaven?") and Marilyn Chapman ("Prepare Today. Win Tomorrow!") are guest speakers. ·         Nature's Place--Nature's Place was recently certified as a "Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom". SPORTS NEWS: Football news, Punt, Pass and Kick, Soccer news
·         Football news-- The OLPH Varsity Rams finished the season strong, advancing to the second round of the playoffs and finishing 4th in the ISC. The U12 Rams (Y team) are 7-1, with Adams Robinson, Sam Stovall, Curtis Dearing, and TJ McGhee having solid performances in recent victories over Silverdale and Baylor.
·         Punt, Pass, and Kick--The OLPH football program was well represented in the recent Punt, Pass and Kick Competition sponsored by the National Football League. Andrew Petrin placed first in the 6/7 competition; CJ Petrin placed first in the 8/9 competition; Landen Cooling placed 3rd in the 8/9 competition, and former OLPH player Tyler Enos placed first in the 14/15 division. Andrew, CJ and Tyler advance to the sectionals on November 11th, 2:00 P.M., at Finley Stadium. Great job!!

SCHOOL NEWS: Oktoberfest, Timeline, Fall Campus work day
·         Oktoberfest: Oktoberfest weekend is almost here! Hopefully, by now you have signed up for the Ram Run (or, at least ordered the tee shirt) and are looking forward to a day of fun with your OLPH community. If you are coming for the race, registration starts at 7:30 A.M.  Come pick up your t-shirt, race number and goody bag in time to line up at the start. Walk-up registrations will be available. If you are not running or walking, come and cheer for those who are! Later in the day, you will want to stick around to see all that the Chattanooga Market has to offer. There will be music, crafts, fresh produce, a showcase of classic Volkswagens, and Bratwurst as only OLPH can grill it. o   Thank you to all who have signed up to help with the OLPH Brat Booth during the Oktoberfest weekend at the Chattanooga Market! All but one of our Volunteer Spots (Cashier 5-7pm Saturday) has been filled! ·         Timeline--Miss Danielson's Math class has put up a timeline in Holy Family Hall of the time period that OLPH School has been in existence. Each grade was assigned a decade from the 1930's to the 2010's to research and add events to show what students through the years have experienced. We invite Alumni off OLPH School to pick up a "Memory Card" near the timeline and add a memory of your school days to the display.
·         Fall Campus work day--Parents and faculty and friends of the school recently donated many hours of labor, as well as some lovely plants to beautify the church and school campus. THANK YOU to all who participated!!

SPORTS NEWS: Volleyball news, Cross Country news, Football news, Soccer news
·         Volleyball news--The regular season is over!  The Junior Varsity finished the season with a record of 3 wins and 6 losses, finishing on a high note with a victory in a 3 set thriller over St. Jude.  The Varsity notched their first victory of the season in a 3 set victory over Oakwood Christian.  The Lady Rams headed into the post season with a record of 1 win and 10 losses.  The season has been a challenge with more losses than wins but the level of improvement in the Lady Rams was tremendous and the future of OLPH looks bright!  Thank you players for all your hard work and commitment throughout the season--you did a great job representing OLPH. Mary Queen of Victory, Pray for us!
·         Cross Country news--The Cross Country team ran their last race of the season on Monday. It was very wet but all the runners did a great job. Congratulations to the whole team on a great season!
·         Football news--Congratulations to the OLPH Rams football team for finishing fourth in the ISC (Independent School Conference)! The Rams advanced to the second round of the playoffs where they came up just short as Lookout Valley scored on the last play of the game to win 18-14.
·         Soccer news--The OLPH soccer teams, 5/6 and 7/8, will have their first practice on Tuesday, October 16 at 3:30. Also on that day, there will be a parent meeting at 5:00 P.M. for the 5/6 grade team. Please make arrangements to attend, so that all paperwork, questions and answers, can be taken care of.
