·         Student Recognition-- Congratulations to Emily Burt, a 7th grader at OLPH for her performance in Auntie Mame. The production is taking place at The Colonnade Center in Ringgold. Upcoming show times are February 22 and 23 at 7:00 P.M., and a matinee on February 23 at 1:00 P.M. The Colonnade Center is located at 264 Catoosa Circle in Ringgold, GA. Break a leg, Emily!
·         CRS Rice Bowl--Growing Food in Burkina Faso--In the small West African nation of Burkina Faso, 80% of the population are farmers. Frequent droughts make it difficult to produce enough food for the entire year. Often, farmers can only grow enough to feed their families for seven months. The rest of the year is called "the hungry season." This week, we pray for families in Burkina Faso and give to CRS Rice Bowl to help small-scale farmers.
·         Jump Rope for Heart--Students in grades Kindergarten through 4th have started participating in "Jump Rope for Heart" during their Physical Education class time. The event benefits the American Heart Association. Online registration is done at www.heart.org/jump . Students were given information/sponsorship forms; additional forms are available in the school office. The last day to turn in this form and money is Friday, March 15. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.
·         Scholarship Fund--Chattanooga Catholic Schools Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for 2nd round distribution of funds.  These applicants should typically be new to the Chattanooga Catholic School System, or have had a significant change in their financial situation within the past 6 months.  All scholarships are presented on a needs basis. ·         Yearbook information--Advertisements:
o   Are you a local business owner, or do you know a local business owner who would benefit from an advertisement in the OLPH yearbook? We need your support. For several years our school has published a yearbook to preserve school memories. To help create a yearbook at a price that all families can afford, we count on support from local business through advertising. Ads range in price from $15 for business card size to $100 for a full page. Ad forms are available in the school office. ·         Yearbook information--PDA (Public Display of Affection):
o   The yearbook committee is now taking orders for Public Display of Affection (PDA) ads for the 2012-2013 yearbook. Commemorate your special student(s) with an ad in the yearbook. What better way to remember kindergarten year, First Communion, and other events? Ads range in price from $15 for of a page to $100 for a full page ad. SCHOOL NEWS: Spaghetti dinner, Lenten Fish Fry, Scrip Sunday
·         Spaghetti dinner--The Knights of Columbus #6099 and Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring a fundraiser for Maura Doyle, an alumnus of OLPH and NDHS, and daughter of Michael and Maura Doyle of St. Stephen Parish. She was recently diagnosed with AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) and is being treated at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center in Nashville, TN. The dinner will be held Sunday, February 24 at the Knights of Columbus #6099 Hall on Lee Highway from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Donations are greatly appreciated.
·         Lenten Fish Fry--The Knights of Columbus council 6099 will hold a fish fry on the remaining Fridays in Lent: February 22, and March 1, 8, and 22. All school families are encouraged to join our parish family in praying the Stations of the Cross at 5:30 P.M. and then stay for dinner in the PLC. Profits from the Fish Fries will be split between the OLPH Home and School and the Seminarian Fund. The class with the greatest participation in the Lenten dinners will receive a pizza party. Get your friends together and join us!
·         Scrip Sunday--"Scrip Sunday" will resume March 3, and continue on the first Sunday of each month. Scrip cards will be available for purchase after all weekend Masses in Holy Family Hall. Shopping with Scrip supports OLPH School without any fundraising…it doesn't get any better than that! Come by our table after Mass to shop from inventory. SPORTS NEWS: Little Rams Basketball Clinic
·         Little Rams Basketball Clinic--The OLPH Booster Club is sponsoring The Little Rams Basketball Clinic, a clinic designed to help young athletes begin to develop their basketball skills. This clinic is for boys and girls in grades 1 through 4 (students from our sister parishes are also invited), and it will be held four Saturday mornings in March (March 2, 9, 16, and 23), at the OLPH gym. The cost is $50 per child which covers four clinic sessions and a t-shirt. Weekly participation is also available for $15 per session, with the fee payable that day. Sign-up sheets are available in the school office. The sign-up sheet will also be posted on our website, www.myolph.com .

·         Student Recognition--OLPH was well represented at the Zone Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Margaret Coles and Meghan Greene were our representatives and did a wonderful job. Thank you, Margaret and Meghan, for being such good ambassadors for OLPH.
·         Student Recognition--Congratulations to our OLPH basketball cheerleaders who won first place in the BCA cheerleading competition on Tuesday, February 12. What a great way to end the season!
·         CRS Rice Bowl--OLPH School and Parish will be participating in CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services' Lenten program, as a way to encounter Jesus through others, especially through the most vulnerable in our world. Rice Bowls will be available on February 16 and 17 for our parish families in Holy Family Hall. OLPH 8th grade students will distribute the Rice Bowls to all students, PreK through grade 8. Please use this to deepen your family's Lenten experience. Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty.

·         Student illnesses--As we have seen in the news, we are in the midst of the flu season. According to the website, www.webmd.com , 'flu symptoms come on suddenly. It often starts with the abrupt onset of fever, headache, fatigue, and body aches.' Other listed symptoms include generalized weakness, dry cough, sore throat, vomiting, belly pain, and 'just plain feeling sick. These flu symptoms usually last for three to four days, but cough and tiredness may linger for up to two weeks after the fever has gone away.'  If your child/ren is experiencing any of these symptoms, please consult with your doctor. Please note on page 9 of the OLPH Calendar/Handbook, 'Children who have been running a fever (100 degrees or above) must be WITHOUT A FEVER FOR TWENTY-FOUR HOURS before returning to school,' and 'If a child is absent for any reason, a note from the parent explaining the reason is expected upon the student's return. Parents should also call the school prior to 8:15 to let the office know the child will be absent. If the child visits a doctor, a doctor's note indicating the reason for the absence and the date the child may return is requested.'

·         ChattiGras--Thank you to all our school families and parishioners, who donated, bought tickets, sponsored, volunteered, or otherwise supported our ChattiGras event for Chattanooga Catholic Schools! The evening was a huge success. We are looking forward to next year's ChattiGras which will be held March 1, 2014. Save the date and make it a tradition!

SPORTS NEWS: Tennis information, Little Rams Basketball Clinic, Basketball tournaments
·         Tennis information-- OLPH Middle School tennis will be coached by Mr. Gary McIntyre, Mrs. Corinne Hennen, and Mr. Blane Haywood. They will teach the students proper technique on forehands, backhands, and serves.
o   Practices will be held on Sundays from 1:00 to 2:00 at the McCallie courts off of Dodds Avenue.  Matches start the week of March 4th, with an end-of-season tournament May 7th.
o   Tennis athletes need a racquet and good court shoes.  Match attire is white tennis skirt for girls and white shorts with pockets for the boys. OLPH supplies the tennis uniform shirt for both boys and girls.
o   A parent meeting will be held Sunday, February 19th at 1:00 P.M. at the McCallie courts while the children practice. Any questions or concerns can be addressed to Mary Pat Haywood at 706-459-6391, or haywood@epbfi.com . See you courtside!

·         Student recognition--OLPH School recently held the annual Spelling Bee and would like to congratulate the follow winners: 1st place: Margaret Coles, 8th grade; 2nd place: Meghan Greene, 8th grade; and 3rd place: Sam Stovall, 7th grade. Congratulations on a job well done, and good luck in the "Zone Bee" scheduled for February 12 at the Baylor School.

·         Carnation sale--The sixth grade classes at OLPH have chosen our twin parish in Dori, Haiti as their service learning project for the year. Through their research they have learned that over 300,000 orphans reside in hut based orphanages of Haiti. To raise funds to send supplies to the Haiti parish, the sixth grade is sponsoring a carnation sale.  Carnations may be ordered for $2 apiece; the sixth graders will deliver the carnation along with your personalized message. Order forms were sent home with each child; extra copies are available in the school office. Due to the nature of ordering the appropriate number of flowers NO LATE ORDERS will be accepted. Payments (cash only) and order forms are due by February 12, 3:30 P.M.

·         Ladies Bible Study-- Are you looking to do something different for Lent? ·         Little Rams Basketball Clinic--The OLPH Booster Club is sponsoring The Little Rams Basketball Clinic, a clinic designed to help young athletes begin to develop their basketball skills. This clinic is for boys and girls in grades 1 through 4 (students from our sister parishes are also invited), and it will be held four Saturday mornings in March (March 2, 9, 16, and 23), at the OLPH gym. The cost is $50 per child which covers four clinic sessions and a t-shirt. Weekly participation is also available for $15 per session, with the fee payable that day. Sign-up sheets were sent home with students in grades 1 through 4; additional copies are available in the school office. The sign-up sheet will also be posted on our website, www.myolph.com .
