The virtue for the month of September is "goodness" (in all we do). Goodness is the desire to do good and to be good; this should always be at the front of a faithful Christian's mind. We know that Jesus came to forgive us and give us eternal life. We show our thanks for this gift in the good we do.
SCHOOL CALENDAR
To all new OLPH School altar servers: We will have altar server training after school in the church at the times listed in the calendar above. Students are to attend all four sessions to complete the training. Mrs. Sherry Ferguson and Mrs. Lori Voges will be in charge of these sessions. If you cannot make it at these times, Joe Reinert will begin an evening training the first Wednesday of each month from 6:00 to 6:45 P.M. Mr. Reinert's classes will begin October 7th. Thank you for serving the Lord in such a special way.
There will be a "VIRTUS" training on Monday, September 14th from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. in the OLPH PLC. VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth, mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville. All adults volunteering or working with children are to complete this program. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers, and boy/girl scout leaders. Registration is done online at www.virtus.org. Information on the VIRTUS program was sent home with each student on Friday, September 4. Look for the bright pink sheet in your child's folder or back pack.
OLPH School Carnival --the 2009 OLPH "Outback Bowl" and Fall Carnival will be held Saturday, September 26th. This is a parish wide event. In addition to the football game (OLPH v. Christian Heritage Lions) there will be carnival games and fun for all. Outback Steakhouse will provide lunch, and a BBQ dinner will be available for purchase after the 5:30 P.M. Mass. Proceeds from the day will go towards supporting OLPH football, school-wide repairs, field trips, and locker room renovation as well as many other student and teacher needs.
Auction and raffle items needed--The Home and School Association will sponsor a silent auction and raffle during the School Carnival. Donated items are tax deductible. All funds raised will benefit the OLPH School teachers and students through renovation of the gym locker rooms, improvement of the softball/baseball field, and other needed school updates/projects. OLPH Carnival "Apple Tree"--The OLPH Home and School Association has an "Apple Tree" located in Holy Family Hall. Written on the apples are the names of items needed for the fall carnival. Please choose an apple and drop off your donation in the "Carnival" box located in Holy Family Hall, or in the hallway of the main school building. Donations are needed by September 6th. Help us make this our best carnival ever!
OLPH BAND--It's not too late to enroll in band class. Band class meets on Monday and Wednesday during the school day and does not interfere with after school activities or sports. Your student can learn to play flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, or bells. Music teaches discipline and teamwork, and studies have shown that learning music increases overall brain power. Most band students receive scholarship assistance when they go to college. The OLPH Cross Country team (3rd, 4th, 5th graders) was "faster than a speeding bullet" Monday, August 31st. Over 85 girls from the Chattanooga area competed in the race held at Baylor School. Thirteen OLPH girls placed in the top 86, including Macy Dearing (1st place overall!), Emalyn San Miguel (4th place overall!), Lee Schemel, Hannah Ingle, Greta Lundquist, Natalie Snellgrove, Elizabeth Labbe, Keely Kutil, Kersten Hicks, Madison Kosky, Alexis Harris, Alexia Douglas, and Rachel Smith. Good job!
OLPH football news--The Ram football teams continue to roll. On Saturday, August 29th the 11/12 year old team defeated McCallie in the "City Jamboree", 8-0. Chris "T-3" Turner scored a TD, while Lucas Mullin added an interception for the defense. Other standouts included Addison Hutton and Tyler Enos. The 9/10 year old team defeated Normal Park, 9-0. The Rams were led by a dominating defense (Adams Robinson, Danny Hodges, Sam Stovall, and Curtis Dearing) which scored a safety; Cruz Bautista scored a 21 yard TD.

Knights of Columbus Council #8576 is sponsoring our local Youth Soccer Challenge on Sunday, September 13thth, at 1:30 P.M. at the St. Jude School soccer field. All boys and girls 10-14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Winners will progress through local, district, and state competitions. The competition involves penalty kicks with designated scoring zones based on accuracy. Appropriate footwear should be worn. Participants are required to have signed parental consent which is available at registration. Registration will close at 2:00. For information contact David Champion at 423-843-3803.
