The faculty and staff of OLPH School would like to wish everyone a blessed and peaceful Christmas.

OLPH Faculty and Staff will attend a Spiritual Retreat with the faculty and staff of St. Jude School on January 4th at Holy Spirit Church. "Starting a New Year" and "How do we nourish ourselves 'spiritually' when we get so busy all year teaching" will be the themes of the retreat. Fr. Ragan Schriver, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee, will lead this day of reflection.

School Closing Due to Inclement Weather or Illness: In the event of inclement weather, parents/guardians will be notified through Parent Alert, the OLPH website, and local TV stations regarding the closing of school. All local network television stations will be called as early as possible to indicate the closing of the school. Please note that most television stations will not put school openings on the air. If you do not see OLPH listed as closed, we will be open. This procedure also pertains to OLPH School closing due to illnesses, i.e. flu.


Mark your calendar for the "January Jam". Once the holidays are over, take some time to recover and de-stress while having a great time. Join us for the "January Jam". This fun-filled evening for adults will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010. The band, "No Big Deal", will be playing some great music. There will be food, Foosball, ping-pong, air hockey, darts, cards, and of course, plenty of dancing--all in the OLPH gym. Advance ticket sales are $15 per person or $25 per couple. Look for an order form in your child's Friday folder. Drink cards will be available for purchase at the event. Each advance ticket sale includes one free drink. Please contact the church office at 423-622-7232, or stop by to purchase a ticket. Tickets will also be available at the school office. After School Art News--A new After School Art schedule will be given out the week we return from Christmas Break. Students do not need to sign up again.


7TH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS - Students finished their persuasive essays with topics ranging from, “Who Should Win the Heisman” to “Year-round Schools” to “What the Best Pet is.” 7th graders also had a “Hot Chocolate Holiday Cafe” on Wednesday, December 16th and shared their holiday memory stories that they wrote.

CHIK-FIL-A “SPIRIT NIGHT” WINNERS - Mrs. Carden's Kindergarten class and Miss Fones's 6th grade homeroom had the most participation in the Chik-Fil-A “Spirit Nights" for the 1st quarter. Chik-Fil-A sent chicken nugget trays to their classrooms during the last week of school for Christmas snack!


CONGRATULATIONS to Tyler Enos who represented the TITANS in the NFL “Punt, Pass & Kick” competition at the TITANS Game on Nov. 29th. Tyler, a 6th grade OLPH student came in 10th in the country out of 3 million participants.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS” - OLPH students in grades K-4 helped Catholic Charities by bringing in supplies for babies. A representative from Catholic Charities came to OLPH School after Mass on Thursday, December 17th to accept the gifts. The students had a birthday cake and snacks to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday.

OLPH GEOGRAPHY BEE – 8th grade student Christopher Coles was the winner of the Geography Bee and classmate Shakayla Dews was the runner-up. Christopher will take the qualifying test in January for the State competition – Good luck Christopher!

All local network television stations will be called as early as possible to indicate the closing of the school. Please note that most television stations will not put school openings on the air. If you do not see OLPH listed as closed, we will be open. This procedure also pertains to OLPH School closing due to illnesses, i.e. flu.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, including costume making, scenery design, decorating, and operating the sound system. Help is also needed the afternoon of Monday, December 14 to move stage items into the gym, and Thursday, December 17 to return items to The Chattanooga Market. If you can help please contact Kathy Sumrell at ksumrell@catholicweb.com. This is a great way to earn PIP hours.


SCRIP CARDS FOR THE HOLIDAYS--OLPH School has a limited selection Scrip gift cards available for purchase after all masses this weekend for your Christmas shopping and entertaining needs.


CONGRATULATIONS TO GRANT SPEER, a fourth grader at OLPH School for his recent First Place finish in the Triple Crown Bouldering Series at Stone Fort. Grant competed in the Junior Division (ages 13 and under). The event is an annual outdoor competition that draws competitors from all across the country. Grant competed against kids from Florida, North Carolina, and New Jersey. Way to go, Grant!!!

SPEECH-LANGUAGE AND HEARING SCREENINGS--The Speech and Hearing Center will be conducting speech and hearing screenings on Friday, December 11. Suggested recommendations are for Kindergarten and 1st graders to have both speech and hearing screenings, and 4th graders to have the hearing screening. Any student can be tested based on parent or teacher concerns. Testing for speech and hearing is $20.00; speech testing only is $12.00; and hearing testing only is $12.00. Checks are made payable to The Speech and Hearing Center. Forms are available in the school office. If you are unsure if your child should be tested, please consult with your homeroom teacher or family doctor.


The 8th grade class will have a "Parent's Night Out" for grades K-5 on Friday, December 11 to raise money for their Washington, D.C. trip. Activities will start at 5:30 and end at 10:30. Dinner and a snack will be provided. Pre-registration is required so please look for a registration form and more information to come home with the students. This is a great opportunity for you to get some Christmas shopping done or just a night out while your children are having fun! The cost is $15 for the first child, $10 for the second child, and $5 for each additional child. Checks are made payable to OLPH. Any questions please email AFPenque23@aol.com. Congratulations to Mary Rebman and Anthony Smith who will be attending Lower Southeast Tennessee Junior Clinic Band on Friday, December 11, at Cleveland Middle School. This is a great honor for our students--they auditioned competitively and were selected for the clinic from among hundreds of students. Anthony Smith made first chair in the seventh grade band, meaning that he had the highest ranking score out of all seventh grade tuba players in our entire area. Keep up the good work!


Candygrams are here! Wish your friends a Merry Christmas with a special candy cane treat. Candygrams are brought to you by the 8th grade class as a fundraiser for their trip to Washington, D.C. An information sheet was sent home with each student--fill in the tags on the sheet and return to the school office by Wednesday, December 9th. The cost is 50 cents per candy cane. Candygrams will be delivered before Christmas Break.

THE GIVING TREE--As in years past, OLPH School, in conjunction with Catholic Charities, has "adopted" families needing assistance during the Christmas season. Last year's "Giving Tree" was a great success. This year OLPH School will provide for eight families in need, including those affected by recent flooding, parents who have lost their jobs, and grandparents raising their grandchildren on a fixed income. The Giving Trees are set up in the main school building, school library, and 7th/8th grade building. The trees are decorated with paper ornaments with the wanted/needed items written on them. After selecting an ornament and purchasing the item, please send the unwrapped gift to the student's homeroom teacher with the ornament attached by Monday, December 14th.

SCRIP CARDS FOR THE HOLIDAYS - A limited selection of cards will be available for purchase after the weekend masses on Dec. 5-6, and Dec. 12-13 for your Christmas shopping and entertaining needs. These purchases will not apply toward the TRIP (Tuition Reduction Incentive Program). One more order for SCRIP cards will be placed before Christmas Break-Tuesday, December 8. Orders need to be in the school office, with payment, by 8:30 a.m. The orders placed on December 8th will apply toward the TRIP program.


THANK YOU to all who contributed to the Thanksgiving Catholic Charities Food Drive. OLPH families contributed enough to feed 200 families for Thanksgiving and also volunteered to assemble the food baskets. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

PARENT ALERT INFORMATION--"Parent Alert" is our mass notification system designed to send messages to parents via phone and email. All parents/guardians need to update their preference contact information on ParentsWeb in order to be alerted of any emergencies, for instance school closing or sport cancellations. These are the steps for updating the Parent Alert Preferences: 1. Log on to your ParentsWeb account, 2. Click on "Web Forms" on the left side of the screen, 3. Click on "Family Demographic Forms", 4. Click on "Custodial Parent Forms"-all custodial parents should be updated, 5. Scroll to the bottom portion of the Custodial Parent Form to the "Preferences" section, 6. Check "yes" or "no" as appropriate for you (the last four questions in Preferences relates to Parent Alert; the first questions related to grade book and directory information), and 7. Click "save".
