STUDENT NEWS: Homework Policy, Middle School Dance, Lifetouch picture proofs

· Homework Policy-- Handbook, page 9: Students must make up work missed during their absence from school. The student will be allowed 1 day per each day absent to turn in missed work or make up missed tests and quizzes. Homework policies are as follows:

o Primary grades (K – 2nd): The student and teacher shall work together to make up any missed assignment.

o Intermediate grades (3rd—5th): The first day absent no homework will be gathered for the student. The teacher will fill out the “Work for an Absent Student” form to give to the student the next day. If the student is out for more than one day the teachers will gather the homework and books and will have them on the bench outside of the school office by 3:00 P.M. This will apply to the second day absent and any days thereafter.

o Middle grades (6th – 8th): All missing assignments may be accessed through ParentsWeb. If the student is out for more than one day parents may request the necessary textbooks to be picked up on the bench outside of the school office by 3:00 P.M.

· Middle School Dance--All OLPH 6th through 8th graders are invited to the first dance of the school year. The dance will be held Saturday, October 8 from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. in the PLC. The cost is $5 per student. The theme is "Sports", so wear your favorite team apparel!

· Lifetouch pictures-- Proofs were given to the students on Friday, September 30. Parents/Guardians, please read the order form information inside the proof envelope and return the order forms by Monday, October 24, to your child's homeroom teacher. If you are not purchasing any pictures, please return the proof to the homeroom teacher. Retakes will be taken Tuesday, October 25, if you are not happy with the proof.

· Oktoberfest Ram Run--Be sure to SAVE THE DATE for Saturday, October 22nd for the Oktoberfest Ram Run!! Registration will begin at 7:30; the One Mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 8:30 A.M. and the 5K at 9:00 A.M. The races will start in front of the First Tennessee Pavilion. Registration forms were sent home with OLPH School students; forms will also be in the back of the church. To register online or for more information go to www.oktoberfestramrun.com . After the Ram Run you can stroll through the Chattanooga Market to look for special treats and handcrafted goods. OLPH School has the best bratwurst booth at the Chattanooga Market so please find our booth and buy a brat! This is our school's biggest fundraiser, and we really hope that you will be there! · Chatti Gras--Save the date for Chatti Gras! This is a city-wide event bringing our Catholic Community together for one celebration. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center. OLPH School, Notre Dame High School, and St. Jude School will be hosting an evening for adults to enjoy dinner, music, dancing and a silent auction. Ticket sales will begin before Christmas, and will be sold at all parishes, school, online, and possibly at local businesses.

SPORTS: 7/8 Soccer, Outback Bowl, Football News, Cross Country News, Volleyball News

· 7/8 grade Soccer--Practice for the 7/8 grade co-ed soccer team begins Monday, October 3, from 3:30 to 5:00. All players must have a current physical on file to begin practice. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays--the first game is scheduled for October 25 at OLPH, 4:30 v. Oakwood. Athletes, remember to bring cleats, shin guards, and a water bottle. If you have not signed up yet, please do so, especially football and volleyball players!

· Outback Bowl--Please come and cheer on the Rams in the Outback Choo-Choo Bowl on Saturday, October 1. It will be a full day of football and fun. The day starts with the U12 Rams taking on Boyd at 9:00 A.M. Next, the U10 Rams take on the Red Bank Lions at 10:30 A.M. The "big game" takes place at 12 Noon as the Rams take on powerful St. Joseph. There will be face painting, a 5 in 1 inflatable, and a great half-time show from our cheerleaders. Outback Steakhouse will be on hand grilling steaks and chicken. Lunch will be served in the PLC from 1:00 to 2:30. This is a great opportunity to see some great football and some impressive players.

· Football News--The U12 Rams defeated McCallie 14-0 last Tuesday. Adams Robinson scored two touchdowns. The U10 Rams are 3-1 with big upcoming games against Red Bank and Signal Mountain.

· Cross Country News--Congratulations to the Cross Country team for a strong finish to their season! The top five runners in each grade level will receive a medal from the ISC. OLPH had four medal winners--Kassidy Barta, 3rd grade-5th place; Rachel Anne Scalla, 4th grade- 2nd place; Jane Anne Haywood, 4th grade- 4th place; and Katrina Lundquist, 8th grade-4th place. Congratulations also to Hannah Ingle for her strong finish of 6th place in the 5th grade. The team has one more meet, Monday, October 3 at 4:15 at Woodland Park Baptist Church. Come out and support all of the Ram runners!

· Volleyball News-- Volleyball tournament begins Monday, October 3, with OLPH playing Christian Heritage at 5:30 at St. Jude School. Good luck, Lady Rams!

STUDENT NEWS: 3rd and 4th grade statue, Virtue Mass

· The 3rd and 4th grade classes are working hard to earn money to buy a St. Francis of Assisi statue and bird bath to put in Nature's Place, the outdoor classroom at OLPH School. The students are earning their own money by doing "extra" chores at home. The statue will be blessed on Tuesday, October 4, the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi.

· Virtue Mass--On Friday, September 30, the 8th grade class will receive their F.O.C.U.S. t-shirts at a special brunch provided by their parents and served by the 7th grade parents.

The training is mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville, for all adults volunteering, chaperoning, or working with children. · St. Cecilia's Closet offers gently used OLPH School uniforms for sale. SPORTS: Football News, Cross Country News, Volleyball News, Choo-Choo Outback Bowl

· Football News--Congratulations to the football team for their 29-6 victory over Normal Park.

· Cross Country News--The Cross Country team which consists of 19 runners has had a successful season. The hard work throughout the week at practices really pays off at the meet on Monday; each runner continues to better his/her time. At our last meet we had four runners who ran their mile race in outstanding times--Rachel-Anne Scalla (7:28), Hannah Ingle (7:35), Jane Anne Haywood (7:52), and Brenna Scott (7:54). Katrina Lundquist is running her two mile race with a time of 17:52. There will be two more meets before the season ends, September 26 and October 3, both held at Woodland Park Baptist Church. Come on out and cheer on the great efforts of the whole team!

· Volleyball News-- Coach Galik reported the Lady Rams have been playing very well. 8th graders Keri Klassen and Allison Hoffer are great setters. Jessica Moore, Kaylee Stone, Mary Margaret Haywood, and Maddie Siragusa are strong hitters. All players continue to improve individually and are working well together as a team. The season is nearing tournament time--come cheer on the Lady Rams!

· Choo Choo Outback Bowl--Please make plans to attend the Choo-Choo Outback Bowl, scheduled for 12:00 Noon kickoff on Saturday, October 1, at OLPH School. Tickets for the game are $20.00 which includes a full Outback lunch, which will be served in the PLC from 1:00 to 2:30. There will be a great half-time show; inflatables will be set up for the kids. The Rams are taking on powerful St. Joseph (last year's Nashville Catholic League champions). The Rams sole defeat during 2010 came in Nashville against St. Joseph. Tickets are available from any football player, cheerleader, or in the school office. Please purchase a ticket and help support this OLPH Football Team fundraiser and enjoy a great afternoon of football.

STUDENT NEWS: Lifetouch Pictures, Mass change for 5th grade, 3rd and 4th grade statue

· Lifetouch Pictures--Lifetouch Studios will be taking school pictures on Monday, September 19. Students in grades PreK through 7th are to wear their OLPH School uniforms; 8th graders will wear "Sunday best." Homeroom group pictures are to be pre-ordered to receive the discount price; individual student pictures will be available in about 3 weeks for parents to preview and decide to purchase. Fall sports pictures will also be taken (team pictures only, no individuals)--this includes cross country, 5/6 soccer, cheerleading, and volleyball. The football team has already had their pictures taken, so they will not be included in Monday's pictures. Each student was given a copy of this information provided by Lifetouch.

· Mass change--The fifth grade students are now attending 8:15 Mass on Wednesdays, rather than Thursdays.

· Chick-fil-A Spirit Night will be Thursday, September 22 from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Chick-fil-A restaurant located on Gunbarrel Road in front of Target/Kohl's. OLPH will receive 20% of sales from fliers that OLPH families turn in to Chick-fil-A during that time. The teacher with the most fliers turned in will win a Chick-fil-A Nugget tray for their classroom. Bring your family and friends to Chick-fil-A on Thursday, September 22nd!

· Spaghetti Dinner--The OLPH Home and School Association would like to invite all parents, guardians, and students to their first social event of the school year. On Monday, September 26 at 6:15 P.M. the Home and School Association will host a FREE spaghetti dinner for OLPH School families in the Parish Life Center (PLC). SPORTS: Fall Sports, Football News, Cross Country News, Volleyball News, Choo-Choo Outback Bowl

· The fall sports season has begun at OLPH School! Game dates and times are posted on ParentsWeb, our website calendar, and on the calendar portion of each Friday Fanfare. Come cheer on our athletes as they participate in Cross Country, Football, and Volleyball. Go Rams!!

· Football News--The OLPH Football team moved to 6-1 with their recent victory over Gordon Lee. The game was a "Friday Night Lights" special, as the OLPH Rams played in front of over 800 fans at NDHS stadium on Friday evening. Ricky Ballard, Addison Hutton, James Teal, and Nick Grannan helped lead the way in the Rams 34-22 victory. Addison Hutton threw three touchdown passes, and the Rams had over 300 yards passing on the night. The Varsity Rams also had an impressive victory over Silverdale, 36-14. The Rams scored three defensive touchdowns--Tyler Enos had an 84 yard interception return, Michael Quatrano had a 41 interception return and Alex Darras blocked a punt, picked up the ball and scampered 24 yards for a score. Alex also connected on a 39 yard field goal. Ricky Ballard scored two touchdowns (56 yard run and 58 yard punt return). Earlier in the week the U12 Rams defeated McCallie, 6-0. Adams Robinson led the team on offense and defense; Sam Stovall and Danny Hodges led the line. The Rams have two games next week--come out and support the team!

· Cross Country News--Congratulations to all of the Cross Country runners. Everyone did a great job at the last meet and many runners improved their time. We had two runners who finished in the top 10, Hannah Ingle and Rachel Anne Scalla. Jane Anne Haywood and Brenna Scott finished with the top 20. Way to go runners!

· Volleyball News-- The girls have done a fantastic job spiking, digging, setting, and serving. JV games start at 4:30 and Varsity games at 5:30. Come watch the OLPH Lady Rams--they are playing great this year!

· Choo Choo Outback Bowl--Please make plans to attend the Choo-Choo Outback Bowl, scheduled for 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 1, at OLPH School. Tickets for the game are $20.00 which includes a full Outback lunch. The Rams are taking on powerful St. Joseph (last year's Nashville Catholic League champions). The Rams sole defeat during 2010 came in Nashville against St. Joseph--so the Rams hope to return the favor this year. Tickets are available from any football player or cheerleader. Please purchase a ticket and help support this OLPH Football Team fundraiser and enjoy a great afternoon of football.

News of Interest: Knights of Columbus Youth Soccer Challenge

· Knights of Columbus Council #8576 is sponsoring our local Youth Soccer Challenge on Saturday, September 24th, at 2:00 P.M., at St. Jude School soccer field during the St. Jude Church picnic. All boys and girls 10-14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Winners will progress through local, district, and state competitions. The competition involves penalty kicks with designated scoring zones based on accuracy. Appropriate footwear should be worn. Participants are required to have signed parental consent which is available at registration. Please note that registration closed at 2:30.
