STUDENT NEWS: Student recognitions, Spring pictures, Yearbook sales, Operation Rice Bowl, Summer Camps, Paper Drive
· Student recognition-- On Friday, April 1, OLPH 7th grader Jessica Moore traveled to Nashville to compete in the state Geography Bee. Out of the 103 competitors from the state of Tennessee, Jessica finished in the top 50. Great job, Jessica! Next year will be even better.
· Student recognition-- Congratulations to Chris Boettner, Lauren Dray, and Pen Sibley. They all took the Duke Talent Identification Program 7th Grade Talent Search and qualified for State Recognition and the Academy for Summer Studies. Good job!
· Spring out-of-uniform pictures--All students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade will be out of uniform on Wednesday, April 13, for individual portraits by Lifetouch. In approximately 3 weeks, each child photographed individually will receive a portrait package, price list and order form. Parents may purchase the package at that time, or returned the unwanted package to the school.
· Spring sports pictures--Portraits will be taken by Lifetouch on Wednesday, April 13, for student athletes participating in OLPH golf, tennis, and track. Students need to bring their sport uniform (including shoes) for the pictures. These portrait packages need to be prepaid, with checks made payable to Lifetouch. Students were given order envelopes through their homeroom teachers; extra envelopes are available in the school office.
· Yearbook sales--Looking forward to looking back! The OLPH yearbook committee is pleased to announce this year's yearbook, Razzle Dazzle, will be bursting with photos, student portraits, activities, highlights, and of course, space for special autographs. The smiles and memories of your student's year at OLPH will be remembered forever in a yearbook. As you make choices about purchases for your student, please consider the long-term value of a yearbook. For the price of a CD or a few music downloads, your student can have a book that captures forever the special events of this year. A yearbook grows more valuable over time. Make sure your student doesn't miss out on this opportunity! To order a yearbook(s) for your student(s), please complete the Yearbook Order Form, which was given to every student through their homeroom teacher. Extra order forms are available in the school office. "Early Bird" yearbook orders placed by May 18th will be for the special price of $30.00. After that time, the regular price of the book will be $35.00. Please make your check payable to OLPH; they may be turned in to homeroom teachers or the school office.
· Operation Rice Bowl--OLPH Eighth Grade F.O.C.U.S. and School Lenten Project--This Lenten season, Catholic Relief Services invites Catholics to pray with their families and faith communities, fast in solidarity with those who hunger, learn about our global community and the challenges of poverty overseas, and give sacrificial contributions to those in need. By giving to Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl, we support health programs in Honduras and around the world, and our own Diocese of Knoxville, which continue the healing work of Jesus and demonstrate God's love for all of our human family. Of the total money collected by our community, 75% will aid programs overseas and 25% will stay and help those in our Knoxville Diocese. School community, rice bowls are due Wednesday, April 13; Parish community, rice bowls are due by Sunday, April 17.
· Summer Camps--A Summer Camp flier, Let the Fun Begin! has been sent home with each student through the homeroom teachers. Several camps are being offered, and include sports, reading and writing, art, drama, science, and enrichment. We have a great team of staff members ready to make your child's summer fun and exciting. Extra fliers are available in the school office. · Paper Drive--There is a "paper drive" sponsored by the OLPH School Earth Savers Recycling Club through April 19. Please support the Recycling Club by bringing in newspapers, magazines, telephone books, and cardboard (please "break down" the cardboard). The paper is to be put in the big paper bin behind the school (not the green recycling cans). Thank you for helping us save the Earth!

· Reconciliation will be available to students in grades 5 and 6 on Wednesday, April 13 at 1:00. 7th and 8th graders may participate in Reconciliation on Thursday, April 14 after the 8:15 A.M. Mass.
· Home and School meeting--The last Home and School meeting for the year will be Wednesday, April 13th at 6:00 P.M. It will be held in the school library. There will be no pizza or babysitting offered for this meeting; therefore, we ask that students do not attend. Summer camp information will be available, and we will have our new Pre-K4 teacher, Mrs. Jessica Heffern, in attendance. Thank you. Kathy Post, President.
· Chick-fil-A--Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A will be Thursday, April 14, at the Gunbarrel Road location from 4:00 to 9:00. OLPH School receives 20% of sales from the blue fliers OLPH families turn in. The teacher with the most participation will receive a Nugget tray for their classroom! The blue fliers will be given to students through their homeroom teachers. Hope to see you there!
· OLPH Pre-K4 Program--We are excited to announce the opening of a Pre-K4 Program for the 2011-2012 school year and would like to introduce our teacher, Mrs. Jessica Heffern. Mrs. Heffern is a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education and is certified as Highly Qualified teacher. Her experience includes teaching Kindergarten through 2nd grade for Hamilton County, and being a Pre-K teacher at Good Shepherd. Mrs. Heffern is a 1999 graduate of OLPH School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2003. She and her husband, Andy, are members of OLPH Parish.

· St. Cecilia's Closet is in need of gently used OLPH School uniforms. This is a great time to clean out your kids closets and donate those uniforms that no longer fit. St. Cecilia's Closet is maintained by the Creative Arts Guild. There are also First Communion dresses and jackets for sale in the "Closet". All proceeds from the sales of the used uniforms benefits the arts at OLPH School, including arts-related field trips. The "Closet" is open Monday through Friday, from 7:45 to 3:45. Donations may be dropped off at the school office; a donation receipt can be given upon request.
· VIRTUS training--A training session will be held on Monday, April 18 in the PLC, from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M. VIRTUS is a program for the protection of children and youth. The training is mandated by the Diocese of Knoxville, for all adults volunteering, chaperoning, or working with children. This includes faculty, staff, substitute teachers, coaches, classroom volunteers and boy/scout leaders. Registration is done online at www.virtus.org .
· OLPH School is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year for students in Pre-K (4 yr. old) through 8th grade. OLPH School has been educating students since 1937. We believe in "Educating Minds, Enlightening Souls, and Strengthening Bodies." · The Booster Club Elections will be held at the OLPH Booster Club meeting on Monday, May 2nd, at 6:30 P.M., in the school library. This election is open to all OLPH Booster Club members. The Interim Secretary, Angela Johnson, can provide details on the duties of each position. · Spring Sports games and matches have begun! OLPH School has boys and girls tennis teams (6th-8th), co-ed track team (5th-8th), and a co-ed golf team (6th-8th). Meets/matches are posted in the calendar section of the Friday Fanfare. GO RAMS!
· Intramural Basketball for grades 3rd and 4th --The remaining dates for the Intramural Basketball program are the following Saturday morning: April 16, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The routine is: 9:00 to 9:30, practice on your half of the court; 9:30 to 10:00, play the team on the other half of the court. The playing schedule is: April 16--9:00, Team A v. parents, 9:30, Team B v. parents, 10:00, Team C v. parents, and 10:30, Team D v. parents. The teams are as follows:

· OLPH Football Annual Awards Dinner will be Saturday, April 16th, at 6:30 P.M., at Finley Stadium. The featured speaker is Russ Huesman, Head Coach of the Chattanooga Mocs football team. The dinner will be catered by O'Charley's Restaurant. Dress for OLPH football players is coat and tie. Additional information and details are available on the football website, www.olphfootball.com .
· New football team: From Coach Billy Dearing: We are excited to announce our plan to have a 7 and 8 year old football team next season. The YMCA is in the process of forming a tackle football league geared toward 7 and 8 year old boys. We will participate in the inaugural season. An information meeting will be conducted in May. Our primary goals will include learning fundamentals and having fun. Once the season begins, practices will be limited to twice a week. This should be a positive, fun and enjoyable experience. Though the team will be comprised primarily of OLPH students, it will not be an official school team. Rather, the team is run through the YMCA. · There are many OLPH Booster Club "spirit items" are available for sale. Please stop by the school office if you would like to purchase an item and help support the OLPH Booster Club. These are great items for athletes, students, and all family members! Also, the OLPH t-shirts for sale by the Booster Club may be used for P.E. classes starting this year.
